WAITARA SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
Application was received by the Waitara school committee from the Waitara Swimming Club for the use of the baths for the coming season. The application was granted on the same conditions as last year,' and Mr. Les. H. Sampson was appointed to represent the school committee on the swimming club's general committee. The headmaster, Mr. A. M. Laing, reported that the roll number was1 400. The school will be staffed and capitation paid next year on the average roll number during September. An average roll number of at least 401 was necessary to place the school in grade 6B. Every effort ahould be made to ensure that children who were five years old or over should commence school during the month. Mr. Hoskin cut the grass during the holidays with a power mower lent by Mr. Whittaker. A demonstration had been given with another machine, which did excellent work. A new bicycle shed was erected during the holidays. It was decided to purchase the new power mower exhibited, and it was placed under the supervision of Mr. W. Johnston.
Owing to the unsatisfactory state of the septic tank it was decided to write to the Health Department requesting that it be put in order at an early date. The chairman stated that he had attended the Arbor Day function when some 30 trees were planted. Mr. V. C. Davies was thanked for supervising the planting. Mr. Laing thanked the committee and others for trees and help given generally in connection with the ceremony. He stated that Mr. Davies had promised to make an inspection later. The visits of itinerant photographers to the school to photograph the pupils was discussed and the matter was left in the hands of the headmaster with power to act. The Soccer shield recently won by the Taranaki® team, of which a Waitara boy was a member, was on view. Messrs. L. Fellows and Rangi Makawe were appointed the visiting committee for this month. lntercession Service. The Waitara Methodist Church held special intercession services on Sunday. Appropriate references were made in the prayers and in the address to the occasion. The Rev. H. Ford conducted the service.
