This handsome sum for a country district was raised at a dance arranged by a women's committee. In their own way these country women, who raised the money by their own endeavours showed a spirit of admiration for the Royal Air Force comparable with that of the man who walked into ths Evening Post office at Wellington and asked one of the clerks, "How much does a Spitfire cost?" "Oh, about £5000, ' replied the cletk, thinking he was just making a casual inquiry. The man went to the writing desk ,and returned with a cheque for £5000 with an instruction that the contribution was to be anonymous, with an acknowledgment only to "S." Taranaki Total £1735. The Tahora contribution and many others, including the Rugby day proceeds, have not yet been received by the treasurer of the Taranaki fund and are therefore not included in the total of £1735 4s lOd. The Southland and Auckland lists have now closed with a total of more than £50,000 between them and Hawkes Bay is rapidly reaching its allocation of £6500. The allocation for Napier and Hastings is £3770 of which about £3000 is in sight. Wellington's total is substantially in exdfess of £10,000. Lord Beaverbrook.
