salvation army event 53 years at hawera The Hawera corps of the Salvation Army on Saturday night celebrated the fifty-third anniversary of its foundation. The corps commander, Adjutant Packer, welcomed members of the orchestra and concert party, which, arranged by Mr. H. C. A. Fox, gave items during the evening, and also two yisitors from Wellington, Colonel Dry, social secretary, and Major Armstrong, who has for many years been connected with Maori mission work. . A concert programme was given by members of the corps and residents of Kawera, opening with the overture march, "Sir Galahad," and a Tyrolean fantasy, "The Alpine Glow," by the orchestra. Songs were givcn by Misses Death, M. Fox and Mr. Quick, and Mesdames Tozer and Hartmann sang a duet. Solo instrumentalists were Miss O. Fox ('cello), Miss Cross (violin), Miss Swadling (Aute) and Master H. Haigh (cornct). Miss D. Bates gave a recitation and the orchestra played two other brackets, "Ole South" and "La Bella Lingara/'and "The Golden Nightingale" and "The Mannikins." A selection, "Clouds and Sunshine," was played by a brass quartette consisting of Masters Haigh, Patterson. Ross and Wilson. Accompaniments were played by Misses E. Rodgers and C. Barrow. Adjutant Packer expressed her gratitude to those who had given items, and a Cornish pasty supper prepared by the women members of the corps was served. Pieces of the birthday cake were sold for mission funds. On Sunday a new corps flag was dedicated and members of the Hawera corps accompanied Colonel Dry and Major Armstrong to the old people s home, where the Colonel and Major sang a duet in Maori.
