back country freight "Your council's request relative to the subsidising of freight costs on manures to remote districts has been given care- j ful consideration and it has been decided, from the viewpoint of national economy, that it is not advisable at this juncture to grant the special assistance suggested." The above decision by the National Council of Primary Production explains the fale of a strong recommendation forwarded by the North Taranaki Council of Primary Production as a means of , assisting farmers in back country areas : to attain greater results from their land. "It is realised that freight charges on j farm supplies to rcmotc districts are | higher than those to districts with easier access, but against this land values in the j former areas are normally much lower. ■ Thus, the gain in one factor in the cost of production tends to balance the loss in the other so that, in general, the position balances itself," stated the communication
