Ml SCELLANEOUS ITEMS. (liuom Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. A. Raynor is the new member of the town board. He fills the vacancy caused by the retirement of Air. H. Munro. The town 'board staff, with the aid of the tar-sealing machine, have laid down and sealed several side streets. Hitherto this class of work was confined to all the business portion of the main street. The added improvements to the by-streets considerably improve the appearance of the town. Air. Caigou, of the High School staff, won the “Rotax” word-building competition promoted by the Wel-r.ngton firm. Over II,(XX) words were sent in. The prize is an up-to-date vacuum cleaner. The branch railway has brought into the district a very large quantity of fertilisers during the last few weeks. Motor lorries were busy for some days delivering the top-dressing consignments to Oaonui, Rahotu and Pungarehu farmers. Last week several trucis-loads of young dairy stock were forwarded from this district to Waikato purchasers. The season has also been notable for the dispatch of sheep and butchers’ lines of stock. The work at the port of Opunake continues on a small but steady plan, placing stone out on thef mole and completing a concrete goods shed, On Wednesday afternoon members of the Opunake Croquet Club entertained visitors from the Alanaia and Rahotu clubs as a wind-up to the season’s play. Games and competitions were indulged in during the afternoon. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the club members. The school committee Jias accepted Mr. Grover's tender for eradicating the gorse fence surrotuiding the school grounds. The new fence will be an iron one.
The Public Works Department, with labour drawn from the unemployed ranks, is making a good job of the construction work of the Wiremu Road. When the three ‘bridges (now in course of construction) are completed, a good road from Opunake (via lhaia) to New Plymouth will be opened. When the short length from lhaia to Te Kiri is opened for vehicular traffic one reflects on the question: How will it affect Opunake from a business point of view? It means a short cut of about 20 miles to Xew Plymouth. The farm land along the Wiremu Road is good grazing land and nearly al! is suitable for subdivision. PERSONAL. Mr. C. Cameron, accompanied by Mrs. Cameron (both ex-Opunake residents) . and sons, paid a visit to Opunake during Easter. Mr. and Mrs. W. Gilmour, of Tanranga, motored- through ami spent the Easter holidays visiting relatives in Opunake and New Plymouth. Both these L.milies are old Opunake residents. Mr. A. J. Brennan. Mrs. Brennan and family, motored to Masterton to spend the Easter holidays with relatives there. Air. and Mrs. C. Eeaver, Of Inglewood, accompanied by Miss Marjorie and Master David Eeaver, spent Easter in Opu nake.
