MANAIA NEWS'

BOY SCOUTS’ CAMP. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Scouts’ eamp at Manaia Domain during the Easter holidays has caused a lot of interest. About seventy boys have been under canvas and have evidently spent a very enjoyable and interesting time. On Thursday afternoon a’ party arrived from Opunake and just about sundown the boys front Mokoia, Hawera and Normanby turned up with their camp gear, etc., on their trek carts and pitched their tents in a beautifully situated part of the domain. On Friday they were put through a course of Scout work, including bridge building. _ ~ ' On Saturday an excursion to the Kaupokonui beach was made by all hands and a good swim and a plentiful supply of good things provided for their consumption made up a very pleasant time. Mr. L. S. Mackie, of Otakeho, gave the boys an interesting address on nature study and a number of specimens which were obtained gave the address a very close-to-nature aspect. Returning to camp, a Scout trail was laid by two of the Scout leaders. The following of this gave added interest to the trip and all returned to camp very tired but pleased with the day’s experiences. A camp fire concert held in the show building brought a long and strenuous day to a close. On Sunday morning the boys held a church parade and were addressed by the Rev. R. Millar, of Manaia. During Sunday afternoon the camp was visited by a large crowd of district residents and supporters of the Scout movement. The Manaia Band was on the camp ground and rendered a number of selections, and afterwards afternoon tea was dispensed to all of the visitors. Owing to rain falling during Sunday night and early on Monday further activities had to be abandoned.

The camp broke up at midday on Monday and previously the camp commandant, Lieut.-Colonel Sutherland, addressed the boys and paid them a high compliment on their excellent behaviour while in camp. The colonel also thanked all those who had done such excellent work in the conduct of the camp, especially mentioning Mesdames A. Gamlin and J. Christie and the indefatigable quartermaster, Mr. J. G. Robertson, to whom the success of the camp was due.
