DISTRICT NEWS.

HURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The first annual meeting of the Hurford Road Hall Society was held on March 31, Mr. Spence (president) occupied the chair. The balance sheet, which showed a email credit, was adopted, Calves donated had realised about £4O. As the ball was not finished in time to obtain the full benefit of winter socials and dances the proceeds from these functions were not as much as they might have been. No stone would be left unturned, however, to make the most of the coming winter. Mr. Spence thanked all who had donated calves and had helped in other ways. He paid a tribute to the work of the secretary, Mr. Bert Thomas, who ho was sorry to say would bo unable to take the position next year, A vote of thanks to Mr. Spence and Mr. Thomas was carried by acclamation. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr. S. Vickers; president, Air. R, D. Spence; vicepresident, Mr. J. Thomas; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. R. Higgins; committee, Messrs. W. Maloney, H. E. Marsh, J. Lynch, T. Walsh, M. Reynolds, F. Watson, and C. R. McKoy. A social committee consisting of the president, vice-president and secretary and the present ladies’ committee was set up to raise funds for the hall. A leap year long night dance and euchre party was held recently. A very enjoyable evening was spend. Prizes for the euchre were won by Mrs. McKoy and Mr. J. Lynch. Music for the dance was supplied by Martin’s orchestra. A well-attended meeting of the Ornata branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Omata hall on April 2 for the pur-pose of discussing the rural intermediate credits and forming a board in the district. Mr. Maloney occupied the chair. Mr. Viekers explained the various clauses. After these had been discussed it was decided to form a board, in conjunction with Oakura if possible, A combined meeting will be held.
