Paterson, hamorous monologues by Mr. L. Taylor. Miss Paterson, Mrs. S. George and Mr. A. Elliot supplied the music for the dance. The ladies provided a dainty supper. On behalf of Miss Topping, Air. T ARIEL (From Our Own Coirespotidenl.) In tho opinion of many visitors from other parts of Taranaki the paddocks between Egmont Village and Eltham arc at present looking quite equal to, or perhaps better than, any’ similar extent of country in the North Island. Sufficient rain has fallen in these parts within the past six weeks to moisten the thoroughly warmed soil, and the result is that the growth in Alareh ft this year is more like that of October or November in ordinary seasons, and there appears to bo no thought among farmers of having to start using winter-fodder earlier than usual, as is the case in less favoured districts. Nevertheless, madam cow in some cases seems determined to make a shorter milking season of it, and it is fairly certain that a good number of herds will be turned out a month sooner than usual.

The Tariki football club held its first practice for the season » week

ago, a number of young and very enthusiastic players donning the jersey for -the first time since leaving school, their efforts to distinguish themselves being decidedly energetic if not altogether scientific; so much so, indeed, that two of them had to be taken to the hospital, one with a broken arm, and the other with a dislocated shoulder. Accidents wil happen. Still the good old game must go on, the broken ranks being temporarily filled by other anxious aspirants to representative honours.

The Tariki Tennis Club recently played a return match with Norfold road, the latter club again emerging victorious with a healthy margin of games. In bowling circles matters have to a certain extent toned down of late. One rink from Tariki has entered for the Hawera Easter tournament, being composed of Therkleson, Rumball, Loveridge, Harrison (s).

So-called summer sickness lias been very prevalent in Tariki for the past four or five weeks, sufferers in many cases being seriously ill from its effect. Largo quantities of artificial manures have been arriving at the railway station lately, farmers having a busy and dustv time carting it away.

Fortnightly socials are being held in the hall under the auspices of the Tariki Football Club and it is intended to continue them throughout the coming winter. The last, held on Tuesday’ nf-glit, was very well attended. Laurence’s orchestra supplied the music. Recent visitors to the district include Miss K. Fleming, who was the guest of Miss Parker. Miss Ina Marsh spent the week-end with Aliss Harrison. Aliss Sterry has left to spend the Easter holidays with friends on tlie coast and in New Plymouth. ’ URUTI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Ideal weather favoured Uruti’s annual sports meeting on March 31, and rhe dance held in the hall the sane evening was a fitting wind-up to a most successful dayls meeting. The committee had spared no pains in the preparations, the floor being ideal for dancing, and the music supplied by Miss H. Edwin was greatly’ appreciated. Extras were played by Miss Alilly Oxcnliam aud Air. V. Laurent. Messrs IV. Reisima and J. Fitzgerald as M's.C. were indefatigable in their attentions to all. A most enjoyable supper was dispensed by a committee of ladies, after which dancing was indulged in till midnight. The annual sale of produce held in connection with the Methodist Harvest Festival services took place in the hall on Monday evening, and Mr. S. S. Butt assisted by’ Air. E. Jones, found, ready buyers for the large and varied assortment of produce, etc., offered. Air. Butt tot’: the opportunity during the evening to bid farewell, on behalf of their many friends in this district, to the Revs. R. B. Gosnell and B. H. N. Teague, who are leaving their charges to continue their work in New Plymouth and Murchison respectively’. He asked the Rev. Gosnell to accept a wallet of notes as a token of esteem in which he is held in the valley. The Rev. Teague was called on to accept a travelling rug. Air. Butt also welcomed Air. E. S. Bennett, who succeeds the Rev. Teague as home niissioner for the Uruti-Mokau district. Numerous games were then indulged in until supper time. The edibles being provided by’ the ladies. An enjoy’able evening terminated with a short dance programme, the music being supplied by Mrs. Wm. Jones (piano), and Mr. C. Whittle (accordion). An unusual discovery was made .during crushing operations on the Upper Uruti Road, when a boulder was found to contain the petrefied remains of a fish. The fish was completely embedded in the rock and, it is understood, has been forwarded to the museum authorities in New Plymouth.

The Upper Uruti Road metalling contract was completed on Monday last. Miss Horton (Auckland) is the guest of Airs. C. Thomson. Air. John Smith (Glasgow), who was a recent visitor to this district, has left for Auckland. Airs, and Miss Paget, who have been visiting Airs. C. Thomson, have returned to Hawke's Bay.
