EASTER IN THE RAIN

MANY ARRANGEMENTS SPOILT. Though the rain of the last few hours has been enthusiastically welcomed by the farming community throughout Taranaki, it has interfered with the Easter vacation from a holiday point of view. Good Friday and Saturday were fine and promised well; Sunday was dull and cloudy but for the most part pleasant, but yesterday spoiled all visions of a perfect Easter, for rain fell in the morning and consequently made impossible or delayed many arrangements. The Kawaroa Park Society’s annual picnic opened dismally. Undecided at first whether to postpone the event or not, the committee made up their minds only when the clouds became lighter and a small muster of people began to arrive. The attendance strengthened as the day wore on, but could not be compared with that of previous years. At the Waiwakaiho links the New Plymouth Golf Club continued their annual tournament under.trying conditions. During the day the first two rounds of the Taranaki amateur championship and the Waiwakaiho championship were played. Trotting at Hawera again proved very popular, yesterday being the last day of the Trotting Club’s Easter meeting. Many of Taranaki’s best athletes and [cyclists made Urenui their meeting place yesterday,- when the Urenui Athletic Sports Club held its annual meeting The attendance was fair, but, as at other places, was spoilt by the weather. The rain brought an unexpected ter- ■ ruination to a camp which was being held at Dr. Blackley's, farm at Tataraimaka. About sixteen High School boys walked to the site on Saturday, intending to spend the remainder of the Easter vacation under canvas, but had to return yesterday afternoon. Outward railway returns from New Plymouth during Easter have shown a slight decrease over those of the corresponding period last year. Good Friday proved a very busy day at the station, both outward and inward traffic being exceptionally heavy. Hie inward returns for the past week are well up to the average.
