RAILWAY OFFICERS CONFER
N.Z. DELEGATE RETURNS. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. For the first time in its history the Australian and New Zealand general railway officers’ conference recently concluded in Melbourne, was presided over by a New Zealand delegate. This honour was done Mr. G. S. Lynde, chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand railways, the only representative of the Dominion present. Mr. Lynde, who with Mrs. Lynde returned to Auckland by the Aorangi today, stated that the agenda paper was the longest yet discussed at these conferences and contained many important and interesting subjects. In Mr. Lynde’s opinion these conferences could not but result in good for the railway systems of Australia and New Zealand, and therefore for the communities they serve. During his brief stay in Australia he was able to visit the New South Wales Government railway workshops, the Victorian and South Australian railway workshops, and he also had an opportunity of looking over the coal handling appliances, the new "Pacific” and “mountain” types of locomotives, and the new observation and dining-cars. He was greatly impressed by all he saw in Sydney. He enjoyed special facilities for seeing the new underground railway and the largest bridge undertaking the world has ever seen, the Sydney harbour bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Lynde will continue thAc journey to Wellington to-morrow.
