SCOUT AMBULANCE WORK

FITZROY WINS THE HAWKINS CUP. COMPETITION AT KAWAROA. The cup for ambulance work among Scouts presented by Mr. J. K. Hawkins ' was won at Kawaroa Park yesterday by the Fitzroy No. 1 team, comprising Scouts Alsop (leader), White, Harlow. Voullaire and Charteris. They scored 83 points out of 100, the scores by other teams being: St. Mary’s (Scout Therkleson, leader) 80 points, Fitzroy No. 2 (Scout Alsop, leader) 74, and West End (Seout Black, leader) 71. Associated with the judge. Dr. P. C. Davie, was the district commissioner, Dr. D. E. Brown. Mr. Armitage trained the Fitzroy No. 1 team, Mr. Therkleson St. Mary’s, Mr. Milne junr. Fitzroy No. 2. and Mr. Trueman West End.

The competition was watched by a large number of people, who took a keen interest in the efficient work of the boys. The cup, which is for annual competition, was previously won outright bv St. Mary’s, who secured it four years in succession. The troop gave it back for competition, however. Next year it was won by Central, and last year again by St. Mary’s. The practical work comprised treatment for a fractured thigh and fractured clavicle. The possible marks were 100, of which 20 were allocated for accuracy in practical work and for stretcher drill and 10 each for neatness, speed and care of patient in practical work, and answers to questions on the treatment for haemorrhage, poisons and unconsciousness. The points awarded were as follow: — Practical Work.

After the competition the West End Cubs, under Major Sandford, gave a display of first-aid work. On the results ■ of this they gained their first-aid badges. Since Thursday 27 Fitzroy Scouts, in charge of Scouter Milne, have been camped at the old waterworks on Mangorci Road, and the ambulance teams marched in from there yesterday. Nineteen boys of the St. Mary’s and West End troops have been encamped in Kawaroa Park under Seouters Hopkins and Trueman. In both camps practical work for badges has been carried out. The boys will return to their homes to-day.
