A match thrown inadvertently in a pool of spilt benzine lying near a garage in Devon Street at 6 p.m. yesterday, caused such a blaze that a paawr-by considered the services of the Fire Brigade necessary. However, water and a number of sacks soon quenched the flames, with the result that the outbreak was stopped before the brigade arrived. As the result of a fall when swinging on a rata vine at Buchanan’s Bush, near Paeroa, Allison Barclay, aged 12, sustained a fracture of the wrist and dislocation of an elbow. The girl was attending a picnic with some Girl Guides, who bandaged the arm and assisted her home. Bhe was later attended by a doctor, who paid a tribute Io tho Girl Guides on the efficient manner in which they had attended to the girl’s injuries. A peculiar accident occurred to a service ear travelling to Marton last week. The ’bus was passing a private car when a stone flew up from one of the tyres of the private conveyance, passing through the windscreen of the ’bus. .The stone must have been travelling at a bullet pace to go through the glass without smashing the whole panel. One of fhe passengers in the back seat was slightly cut by a flying particle of glass. A Wangenui traveller, when told of tho incident, said that he had seen a stone thrown from a passing car overtake a service ’bus and pass the driver at a great pace to penetrate the window.
