RUNNING AND CYCLING

EASTER SPORTS AT URENUI DAY OF INTERESTING RACING. WELL ORGANISED GATHERING. In spite of a substantial shower of tain about midday, the annual Easter sports meeting at Urenui yesterday was a very successful gathering from all points of view. Good racing was witnessed in both running and cycling events; the general organisation was thorough, and the public attended in large numbers. Thus all the essential factors were present to ensure success ,The gate receipts totalled £66 Bs, and Jthe sheep-guessing competition conducted bv Air. D. Cunningham realised £5 Apart from the flat track events, there yvas a unmber of items on the programme such as wood chopping and miscellaneous competitions which created considerable public interest. The events .'Were dispatched with great promptness, fend the programme came to a conclusion fifteen-minutes before scheduled time. Before the people dispersed, Mr. S. S’opless, president of the club, introduced Mr. J. C. Rolleston, M.P. for the district. who presented the prizes and trophies. Mr. Rolleston made brief reference to the work of the electoral boundaries revision commission by stating that he was sorry he was about to lose from his electorate the district from Mok a u to Urenui, where he had made Jnany friends, both socially and politically. Aroa (100yds) at the end of the fourth |ap and tie three then caught the iead- ' era after five laps had been run. From jthen on they were bunched. In the back straight in the eighth lap AlcCann and ®. Aroa fell. The remainder were riding very strongly in the tenth lap. A. AViiey tried to get through in the back straight, causing a spill, bringing J. Blackwell and himself down. On the J>ell lap C. Aroa made a bid for the front, with C. Parker and R. Yardley Close up. With a quarter of a lap to go C. Parker took the lead to win by two lengths from Aroa, who beat R. lYardley by about the same distance. Two Mile New Plymouth Cycle Championship (lap prizes of ss). —S. AlcCann J, C. Parker 2. From the start C. Parker shot to the front aud led for the first two laps. Then L. Ciaffey came up and challenged (the leader, getting across the line for ibhe third lap. C. Aroa then made a tnove up, making the lap very fast, and held the position for the following three laps, leading by about 20 yards. AlcCann and Parker began to move and pranaged to catch Aroa before he crossed the line for the bell lap. With half Il lap to go Parker and AlcCann were having a ding-dong go, but AlcCann proved too good coming down the straight,, and managed to get over the tine about two lengths ahead of Parker.
