Fine weather favoured the conclusion of the Auckland autumn meeting at Ellerslie to-day. Some splendid contests W’ere again provided, most of the finishes being very close. Results were not very favourable to backers, Cynthia N. and Satrap being the only favourites to score. For the Nelson Handicap Cynthia N. was a slightly better favourite than Star Comet, with good money also for Newbury. Miss Mercia was quickly in front and led into the straight from Diamond Queen, Cybele, Newbury, Welkne, Cynthia N. and Winsome Boy. Cynthia N. did best in the run home to win by a length from Cybele, who beat Newbury by a neck. Respirator was fourth, with Miss Mercia and Winsome JJpy next. Cybele and Newbury should soon do better and Hone Heke will be more suited by a shorter distance.

PRODICE WINS BY A NECK. The Raasay-Gesto bracket was a strong order for the Victoria Handicap, while the eventual winner, Prodiee, was at a good price. English Measure and Gesto began best, followed by Te Atiawa, who took charge at the cutting. Te Atiawa showed the way into the straight, closely followed by Prodice, who had run through quickly, Gesto, Raasay and Perception. Prodiee had charge at the distance, where there was a bit of crowding between Gesto, Raasay and Perception. In a good finish Prodiee scored by a neck from Gesto, who beat Raasay by a similar margin. Perception ecvas fourth, followed by Te Atiawa and Luey Rose. ’White Wings was cut back last at the start and Mithra was never dangerous. Perception made an improved showing. LADY CINTRA WINS HURDLES. Potoanui was a solid favourite, for the Trial Hurdles, with Ripon Abbey a good second choice. Ripon Abbey made most of the running to lead into the straight with Lady Cintra and Lady Spalpeen in close attendance. In a good finish Lady Cintra won by about a length from Ripon Abbey, who beat Lady Spalpeen by a head. Potqaniji was a moderate fourth. For a. novice Ripon Abbey shaped really well. Potoanui was handy to the leaders at the halfmile post, where he met with some interference and was never afterwards dangerous. Prince Papa fell, while Luxurious and Nola Knight were pulled up. MASK FINISHES SPLENDIDLY. There was good betting in the Autumn Handicap, Star Stranger being a slightly better favourite than Mandane, with Mask fifth choice at a nice price. The pace was slow early in the race, Mandane and Town. Bank making the running to lead into the straight closely attended by Papatu, Transformer and Mask, with the others bunched. Mask finished splendidly and got up in the last little bit to beat Town Bank by half a length. Princess Ronnie, who finished fast on the outside, was a head away third. Mandane was fourth, and then came Star Stranger and Papatu. The slow pace did not suit the favourite and Papatu, but was to the liking of Mask. Town Bank just failed and his turn eannot be long delayed. WILTSHIRE WINS EASILY. All started in the Mangere Steeplechase, Wedding March being a good favourite over Wiltshire. Wiltshire made most of the running and along the back th« last time he was a few lengths dear

of Wedding March and Revel, Wedding March fell at the fence by the five furlong post and then Wiltshire went away to win easily- by ten lengths from Revel, who just lasted long enough to beat Glenotus by a head. Wedding March was going nicely when he fell, though he would not have beaten the Winner. Glendowie was above himself and did not show up. SATRAP WINS ALL THE WAY. Only four started in the St. Leger and Satrap was backed down to odds on. Ridden by Roy Reed, Satrap set a solid pace "to lead throughout and win easily by four lengths from In the Shade, who beat Damaris by three parts of a length. Laughing Prince, who was in second position most of the way, faded out at the finish. AUSSIE JUST SUCCEEDS. Nancy Lee, Money Order and Aussie (ill received heavy support in the Huia Handicap. Kingfield, Melissa , and Nancy Lee found their feet and led into the straight from Subdivision, Joy King and Aussie. Near the distance Aussie and Joy King came through, Aussie winning a good race by less than a length from Joy King, Nancy Lee being half a length away third. Kingfield, who appeared to be third, was placed fourth in front of High Finance and King Emerald. Nancy Lee was a little unlucky in the straight, but Aussie finished in great style and is at his very best again. Joy King and Kingfield went fine races and the latter should score very soon. FLYING JULIET WINS BY A HEAD. There was heavy wagering on the Islington Handicap, Thaw, the Le Choucas —Titree bracket, and Valkon being most in demand. Day Guard attended to the pace-making and was the leader at the home turn from Flying Juliet, Thaw, Ballymoy 11. and King Merv. Flying Juliet took charge at the distance and got home by a head from the fast finishing Valkon, who beat Day Guard by three parts of a length. King Merv was fourth, with Le Choucas, Titree and Siaosi next. Thaw had every chance and faded out at the finish. There were only two horses behind Valkon at the six furlong post and he was still well back at the turn. King Merv made a good showing and is likely to do better soon. CANTERBURY J.C. MEETING « BIG DROP IN TOTALISATOR. CONTINUOUS RAIN FALLS. Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting opened to-day in almost continuous drizzling rain which, however, was not heavy enough to affect the going seriously. The attendance was fair. Christchurch, Last Night. The autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was commenced today in wretched weather. Light rain commenced to fall early in th e morning and it continued at intervals all day. As’ was to be expected, there was a big drop in the attendance, and under the circumstances the club was fortunate in handling £38,877 on the totalisator, compared with £43,457 last Easter Monday. The track was a trifle slow, but it never became really heavy. The North Otago gelding Heather Lad was a hot favourite for' the Kildare Handicap, which attracted £ve runners with jumping jockeys. • Karitane was first out. Heather Lad soon joined her and they ran to the home bend well clear of Moratorium and Crossbow-. Then Moratorium moved up. lie was first into the straight and beat Karitane easily by two lengths. Heather Lad stopped badly, finishing five lengths away, with Tarleton a length further back. Moratorium is an improving horse likely to win in much better company. PRICKLES WINS THE STAKES. Full Feather and Star Raid were scratched for the Champagne Stakes, and in a field of six Goblin Market was a hot favourite, Chide having a slight call over the others. Nightmarch led Chide and Miss Ransom to the course proper, with Concentrate next, Prickles being last. Nightmarch and Chide were both in trouble at the distance, when Miss Ransom drew clear with Concentrate next. Prickles then commenced a strong run from the back and, wearing the leaders down, she beat Mies Ransom by a length, Concentrate being half a length away, with Chide three lengths further back. Prickles had not previously won a race, but she was third in a five furlong handicap at Riccarton in February, while she was second to Episode over six furlongs at Trentham last month. On that occasion, however, she w-as receiving two stone jn weight. Her success makes the South Island two-year-olds look poor, unless the heavy track affected the result. Probably it was the track that caused Chide to stop, while it is pretty certain this was the cause of the poor show’ made by Goblin Market, who was never near the front. AUTUMN PLATE TO STARFLIGTIT. Burranda and Starflight disputed favouritism for the Autumn Plate, the former winding up with a slight call. Fair Exchange and Starflight made the running to the straight, where Phillipic and First Sight were handy. Phillipic retired a little further on. Starflight then drew dear and' won decisively by two lengths from First Sight, who stayed on and beat Fair Exchange by half a length. Barryanda seemed unable to gallop in the early stages, but she finished well in fourth place. The winner is a good sort of a three-year-old by Archery from Stardaneer, the dam of Limelight and other smart gallopers. He was third in the Hororate Cup a week ago and also had good track form to recommend him. First Sight ran a great race under a big weight, as he was giving nearly two stone to the winner.

The scratching of Prickles and Synonym left eleven starters for the Russley Plate. The • Southlander Rin-tin-tin was a pronounced favourite and, jumping out smartly from the inside position, he showed dear immediately with Great Star soon in second place. They ran like this to the course proper, where Red Heckle, Rigmarole, The Viscount and Merivale were following in that order. The leading pair were well clear at the distance with the favourite holding a great start. Then Red Heckle came with a rattle and got up do beat Rin-tin-tin by a neck. Great Star was over a length away, with Rigmarole and Merivale together two lengths further baek. This was the winner’s first appearance. He is by Warplane from Glenluce and carries the colours of the West Coast owner, Mr. 11. D. Roberts. He covered a lot of ground, as he started second from the outside and finished on the rails. Rin-tin-tin ran a sound race but the weight stopped him at the end. REREMOANA'S GREAT RACE. The Great Easter attracted a field of 11, Solrose being the only scratching. Crown Area was a pronounced favourite, while Reremoana just headed Booster for second choice. Cimabue led Booster for a furlong, when Eulalie ran past them, Crown Area and Reremoana being prominent in the next bunch. They ran like this to the home turn, where Set Sail and Tresham also joined in. Eulalie retired at the distance, leaving Booster in front. Then Reremoana challenged and he and Booster settled down to a great struggle over the last furlong, but Reremoana gradually wore the Otago horse down, winning by a short head, an advantage he held for the last three strides. Set Sail was two lengths away, with Tresham and Cimabue next. The winner was loudly cheered for a great performance. Booster also ran a sound race, his best since he won the Members’ Handicap in November. Set Sail and Tresham stayed on well to beat the others. Eulalie went well for six furlongs and then collapsed, while Crown Area was another who failed te come on in the stray- 1

GIMCRACK TO GOLDEN ARMOUR. Barryanda, Martian Spear and Kilcaven were scratched for the Gimerack Handicap, leaving a field of seven of fair hack class. Te Awhine was always favourite, but she disappointed. Wild Work led for a furlong, when she dropped baek, Golden Armour going on from Kotor and Te Awhine. They ran like this to the straight, and Golden Armour held her place without any trouble, beating Rotor by tw’O lengths. Wild Work finished fast three lengths away third, while Luminant got up to beat the tiring Te Awhine for fourth place. The winner's performance was attractive. It was her first success, but she will do still better. Rotor ran a good race and Wild Work might have been hard to beat but for her position early. Te Awhine failed to stay, but apart from that she did not go well in the heavy ground. BATTLE C< PREVAILS. Footfall, Lady Desmond and Black Mint were withdrawn from the Sockburn Handicap, for which Battle Colours and Stormy had a great battle for favouritism, Oratrix being nearly as well backed. When the field settled down Battle Colours was in front, and at the end of three fnrlongs he was two lengths in front of Assurance, while a little further on Front Rank took third place. They ran like this to th© straight, and though Front Rank challenged st.’Qngly, Battle Colours beat her easily by a length. Oratrix. after being last in the early stages, finished on well to get third three lengtlrs away, with Rapier, who also made a late appearance, a neck further back. The winner is an improving horse who will take much larger honours later on. COURTENAY TO LUCY LOCKET. Silver Coot was the only scratching for the Courtenay Handicap. Solrose was a strong favourite, with Don Jose easily second choice. Finora and Polydectes led Sprinkler and Honey Comb to the straight. The three first named then dropped on and Lucy Locket, who had been last jn the early stages, came on to beat Honey Comb easily by over a length. Solrose seemed unable to fu? in the ground until ■ the straight was reached, -when he ran on well, finishing two lengths away third, with Don Jose and Polydectes next. Lucy Locket has only recently struck form, and she will win more races before the end of the season. Honey Comb was always going well and this imported horse will be worth keeping in mind.
