ELTHAM PUBLIC SCHOOL

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eltham School Committee was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs. W. Ricketts (chairman), A. R. Kemp, J. Walsh, L. C. Penny, W. H. Young, A. Ware, Revs. J. A. Ryburn and W. W. Avery (secretary). The financial report showed a credit balance of £46 2s 2d. Accounts amounting to £2O 144 s 9d were passed for payment. The chairman stated that after interviewing the Hon. 0. J. Hawken, he had received a reply to the effect that the Minister of Education had advised that the matter of the old school would be dealt with early in the financial year. The headmaster reported as follows: Average attendance during month 352 (hoys 179, girls 173), average attendance during quarter 347 (boys 174, girls 173). A mild epidemic of chickenpox was at present prevailing in the district and was considerably affecting the attendance. The following numbers had secured swimming certificates: Learners’ certificate, 50 yards), 48 pupils; proficiency certificate, 220 yards, 31 pupils; merit certificate, 880 yards. 27 pupils; twelve children swam a mile and two a mils and a-half. The dental nurse (Miss Hunt) reported for the month as follows: Patients treated 109, operations performed 233. During the month the secretary (Mr. W. W. Avery) accompanied the nurse to the following schools: Matapu (32 pupils treated), Okaiawa (43 pupils treated), Manaia (59 pupils treated), Auroa (35 fupils treated), Awatuna (20 pupils reated), Kapuni (36 pupils treated), and Riverlea (12 pupils treated). The chairman stated that before Christmas an appeal had been made to the public for funds for the upkeep of th© heating system, and the only response had been £3. It was decided to jnake a special appeal in the near future. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Gibson, who donated the frame for the Dixon banner team photographs. The caretaker of the baths reported the takings for the season were £25 13s 4d, an increase of £5 on laet year’s receipts.

An application from the Eltham Operatic Society for the iise of a room in the old school was granted on th* Mme terms as last year.
