A London cable reports the death of Brigadier Frederick Richard Cox of the Salvation Army. Brigadier Cox was secretary to the late General Booth with whom he toured the world. Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, attended the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A Press Association message from Christchurch reports the death of SeniorSergeant W. E. Lewis, who had been stationed at Christchurch for about two years, after a short illness. He leaves a widow and one child. Mr. D. Hooker, who has been spending a holiday in New Plymouth, returned to Cambridge on Saturday. Messrs. H. N. Johnson (secretary) and R. G. Howell, of the New Plymouth Savage Club, on the eve of their marriages, were given presentations by the club vicepresident, Mr. C. H. Wyatt, on behalf of members. Mr. W. J. Mount joy, an old boy of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, has won the Bowen University Prize for an essay on an historical subject connected with the British Empire. Mr. A. J. Dickson, an old Technical College boy, has won a University travelling, scholarship in engineering.
