Thirteen started in the President’s Handicap at the Auckland autumn meeting to-day. Satrap was made a hot favourite, being mare than twice as well backed as the second choice, Mandane, while the eventual winner, Mask, was fourth choice at a nice price. Le Choucas, Papatu and Mask were the first to single out and along the back they were joined by Corinax and Queen (Arch. Corinax took charge at the five furlongs post to lead into the straight from Papatu, Queen Arch, Le Choucas, Mask and Satrap. In a great finish Mask got home by half a length from Papatu, who beat Town Bank by a neck. Mandane came from a long way back to finish fourth in front of Sati ap, Hipo and Queen Arch. Mask is at his best again, while Papatu and Town Bank are coming on quickly. Satrap made a good showing and Princess Ronnie should soon do better. Corinax bled.
| GREAT NORTHERN OAKS. There were six runners in the Great Northern Oaks, Damaris being a good favourite, with the runner-up Aurieulus. The outsider of the field, Titree, took charge quickly to lead past the stand four lengths clear of Aurieulus, with Miss Mercia and Damaris next. Damaris ran up second along the back and went to the front at the end of a mile. Near the distance Aurieulus and Titree made efforts, but Damaris went away to win very easily from Aurieulus, who beat Titree by a head. Damaris showed undoubted superiority in moderate field. Sectional times were: Four furlongs. 52 3-ssec; mile, Imin 4,see; last four furlongs, 49 3-ssec. HURDLES TO WEDDING MARCH. The Brighton Hurdles was a good betting race, with Wedding March, Archibald and Lady Spalpeen all heavily backed. Mia Bella led to the first fence and then a little further on Archibald and Kawa took charge. Potoanui assumed command at the fourth fence to lead past the stand several lengths clear of Archibald, Lady Spalpeen and Kawa, with Revel sixth and Wedding March last. Along the back Lady Spalpeen closed on Potoanui while Archibald made a bad jump and lost several lengths. Four furlongs from home Potoanui was a couple of lengths clear of Lady Spalpeen, with Archibald, Kawa, Revel and Wedding March next. At this stage Revel appeared to be interfered with by Archibald, and at the home turn the order was Potoanui, Ladv Spalpeen, Kawa, Wedding March and’ Revel. Wedding March came on the scene at the last fence and prevailled in the run home by a length from I Revel, who defeated Potoanui by a I neck. Lady Spalpeen was fourth with the others well beaten. The winner I was splendidly handled, whereas Revel did not seem ‘to be ridden to the best advantage. Potoanui. of whom a lot of use was made, and Lady Spalpeen went splendid races. OUTSIDER WINS THE EASTER. There was a big boil over in the I Easter Handicap, an outsider, In the Shade, getting home to return a large dividend. Joy King was favourite, with Bright Glow a good second and Awarere third in demand. Laughing Prince began best but soon gave way to Awarere and Ballymoy IL, who were the leaders along the back from Paganelli, Nancy Lee. Great Charter, Bright Glow and .Lysander. There was not much change in the leading positions at
the half-mile, although Valkon moved up sixth. Awerer® and Ballymoy 11. were still the leading pair at the home turn, where Paganelli, Bright Glow, Valkon, Great Charter and Lysander were their closest attendants. The field spread across the course at the distance and in a wonderful finish In the Shade earns through to beat Awarere by half a length. Great Charter was a similar distance away third and Nancy Lee close up fourth. Then came Joy King, Valkon, Bright Glow and Lysander. In the Shade was last for the first few furlongs and finished brilliantly from a long way back. Awarere ran right up to track form and just failed. Great Charter was always prominent, but Joy King was badly placed early. Nancy Lee, after losing a prominent position early, was running on at the finish. Bright Glow had every chance. Sectional times were: One furlong, 13 sec; two furlongs, 24sec; three furlongs, 35Jsec; four furlongs, 47 2-ssec; the last four furlongs, 50 4-ssee. CHAMPAGNE STAKES TO EPISODE. Nine started in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Raasay was a good favourite, about £BOO better backed than the second choice, Episode, who had a good call over Prince Humphrey. Episode and Freehold were quickest to begin and they led into the straight closely followed by Mithra, Prince Humphrey and Raasay, who were in a bunch. Inside the distance Prince Humphrey challenged Episode, but under pressure the latter went away again to win by nearly two lengths from Prince Humphrey. Freehold was threeparts of a length away third and Mithra was fourth. Then followed Raasay and Prodice. The winner was entirely on her merits and is undoubtedly good. Raasay was a bit disappointing and Staghunter also shaped poorly. THE MANGERE STEEPLECHASE.
For the Mangere Steeplechase Prince Rufus, Wiltshire and Memsahib were the best backed. Memsahib and Mashoor made play for a little over a mile and then Wiltshire forged to the front. Going up the second time he was closely followed by Prince Rufus, Uralla and Memsahib. Wiltshire was always doing best in the final stages and eventually won easily by five lengths from Uralla, who beat Prince Rufus by a similar margin. Sea Comet was fourth, followed by .Simplicitas and Memsahib. Wiltshire has regained his confidence as a fencer and should go a lot further. Uralla made a very promising showing and will benefit by the experience. WHITE WINGS MUCH IMPROVED. All started in the Onslow Stakes, Perception being a good favourite over Gesto and White Wings. Bulolo ran to the front quickly and led to the straight from Lucy Rose, Te Atiawa, White Wings, Jolly Money, Gesto and Perception. White Wings came through inside the distance to score by a length from Lucy Rose, who beat Gesto by three-parts of 3, length. Te Atiawa was fourth, followed by Perception, Jolly Money and Bulolo. Perception did not begin smartly enough and was standing the leaders up some lengths at the home turn. White Wings is much improved. Bulolo showed lots of pace, and Jolly'Money also went well. TE MONANUI'S SISTER RUNSWELL The Eden Handicap was a great betting race with Micrometer, Cynthia N, and Liaison most in demand. Ohinemuri rushed to the front quickly a«d at the end of four furlongs was four lengths out from Cynthia N, Dimmer, Liaison, Welcome Home and Winsome Boy. Nearing the turn Ohinemuri increased her lead to eight lengths and Liaison dropped back. Otherwise the order was unchanged. Nothing could get near Ohinemuri at the finish, and she won by five lengths from Winsome Boy, who cut Cynthia N out of second place by a neck. Micrometer finished well in the fourth position, and then >'n order were Dimmer, Cvmbel, Liaison. The winner is a full sister to Te Monanui. She outpaced the field and returned double figures.
