MEETING OF THE TOWN BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Maiuia Town Board was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs. N. C. Innes (chairman), V. H. Hobday, 11. Mead, J. Hickey, J. A. (I. Cosgrove, E. Massey and A. Hannah. J. McMahon waited ou the board to ask for a street light in I’alukupa Street. His previous application had not been complied with, lie said, although a promise of attention to the matter had been given. It was decided to make temporary arrangements pending a permanent job as soon as practicable. A deputation from the Sports and Football Clubs' Board asked that sometiling be done in re-covering the concrete cricket pitch on the recreation ground. It was pointed out that the pitch iu its present condition was a source of danger to football players. A lengthy - discussion was ended by the representatives of the various clubs arranging to meet and come to settlement of the matter. The board granted Mrs. A. Camlin's request on behalf of the local branch of the Plunket Society to hold a street stall. The sports club asked permission to hold a seven-a side tournament in the recreation ground on April 21. This was granted. The application of A. J. Clare tor a tarred footpath in front of his premises in Main Street was left to the works committee. Receipts for the past month included rates £555 10s 10d, licenses £B3 3s 9d, cemetery £2, domain £27, stated a report submitted by the clerk. Accounts amounting to £2IG 5s lid were passed for payment. The death of Mrs. Oxley occurred in the Hawora hospital on Friday night. Mr. Oxley is a member .of the Bank <>f New Zealand staff at Manaia. Mrs. Oxley had been in hospital for a short period suffering from appendicitis. Mr. R. Fletcher, who has been for some time branch manager in Manaia for Newton King. Ltd., has joined tile Police Department at Wellington. Rain fell on three days at Manaia during Marfli, i-lie total being 1.80 inches. .-ALPINI-; CLUB BRANCH FORMED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A large party of Hawera members of the newly formed Alpine Club visited Manaia on Tuesday evening to meet intending Manaia members with a view to forming a branch of the club in Manaia. Mr. Innes was the chairman. Air. Rod Syme, after apologising fol the absence of Mr. AV. G. AValkley, chairman of the southern committee of the National Park Board, explained the proposed activities of the club. Mr. Hooker stated that it was hoped to present a. trophy for the best collection of members’ photographs of the mountain at the Hawera winter show. Mr. A. Gamlin, a member of the Park Board, apologised for the absence of Mr. E. Long, and urged the necessity for forming a separate park board. Mr. Swinbonrne spoke of the bened s the club offered.
Mr. Syme, in answer to a query, said that excursions would be held on weekends and holidays, and club leaders would 'be available. It was resolvSß unanimously that a branch of the alpine club be formed in Manaia and the following officers then elected: President, Mr. A. Gamlin; vice-president, Mr. P. F. Hammonds; secretary, Mr. Guy Edwards; club leader, Mr. B. Rawson; committee, Messrs. D. G. Sherdon, J. Bakers. A. Snowden. K, McDonald, -T. Hammonds, Misses M. Rowe and E. Birkett. LIBRARY COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the library committee was held on 'fuesday evening. Present: Messrs. T. A. Bridge (chairman), AV. Vincent, J. E. Norton, J. AV. Snowden, J. A. G. Cosgrove, J. Forrester and Dr. Davies. The librarian’s report showed that receipts were £0 7s 9d. Another book of the Meuli bequest had arrived, namely, "AVith the Riff Kabyles,” by Yerhorst, Mr. Forrester drew attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the finances and pointed out the advisability of instructing the secretary to write to the Town Board requesting payment of the annual subsidy. The secretary suggested placing the balance-sheet before the Town Board at an ectliei- date. Various means were suggested for raising funds, and it was decided that when these are available- £lO be spent on the purchase of new books. It was resolved to make an appeal to the public to become subscribers io Hie library. ITIBERIAN SOCIETY ACTIVITIES. A meeting of the Hibernian and District Sports Club was held during the week. The financial returns from the previous Saturday's sports were very satisfactiry, hut the president suggested holding future meetings ou Wednesdays. The matter was held over. Arrangements were made for a, seven-a-side football tournament on April 21, subject to the union’s consent. It was explained that several teams from Taranaki clubs would probably be entering for the Citizens’ Cup soccer competitions, and that entries for the Mills Rugby Cup would be well up to those for previous years. Jerseys are to be presented to members of the winning teams. The Manaian Band was engaged to play on the sports ground, aud the question of refreshments waA left to the president and secretary to arrange. A working bee will be held on the ground, on Wednesday. The following officers were elected for the tournament day: Supervisors, Messrs. A. H. Christie and E. T. Burke; referees for Rugby games from the following: Messrs. J. Christie, Whittington, K. McNae, J. Kiley, IV. Badley, F. Atkins and J. Stevens; line umpires. W. Bourke, A. MeCreeken, C. Burke and J. Hickey; Time-keepers, J. Russell and H. L. Vines; result steward, J. Daly. The arrangements for the soccer matches were left to Messrs. <l. H. Edwards and AV. Budd, with Mr. P. F. Hammonds as time-keper. BOWLING MATCH AVITH OPUNAKE. A contingent of Opunake bowlers visited Manaia on Wednesday afternoon, playing three rinks of Manaia bowlers
