SPORTING
NOTES FROM THE TRACKS. (By “Hurry On. ’) The big Easter mile at Ellerslie should «ee Bright Glow and Joy King prominent, but that good little mare Nancy Lee might cause a lot of trouble. Awarere is another that is galloping well. Perception, the half brother to Bathos and Resinous, may be favourite for the Onslow, but Pure Gold and Gesto are an improving pair. In Manly and Orazone Taranaki has a likely pair in the Fielding Cup, and these two will give Joy Bird no end of trouble. Vivo cannot be counted out of it iither. With a light weight up Arrow Lad is decidedly useful and he should be handy in the sprint. Aropeta is in good heart and improved for his race at Bulk. He will carry good support whenever he starts. Oney Cox’s pair, Reremoana and Lady Desmond, are in great demand for the Great Easter and Great Autumn, but they have the hardest part to do. Good as he is old “Rere” will find it hard to give away over a stone to Crown Area and Booster, while the lady will find Tiesham and Thorndale a hard pair to dispose of. Goblin Market looks like being a hot order in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton, but Rin-tin-tin is quite capable of making him gallop. Both these will be good three-year-olds. Thrift will be well in the market for the Maiden at Fielding, but Egeria and Fermanagh can muster up a good turn of pace. Many people seem to think that Satrap has the President’s Handicap at EJerslie at his mercy, but to defeat Mandane at two pounds difference in the weights is a hard task for a three-year-old. Tilly’s charge is well just now and she can run out a great mile and a-quarter, her victory in the Summer Cup was proof of that. With Raasay, Prince Humphrey, Staghunter and Episode engaged the Great Northern Champagne Stakes looks like being a rare good race. The first-named has come on a lot of late. The much discussed Ridgemount will make his first appearance in his new owner's colours to-day, and much interest will be evinced as to how he shapes. He looked a bit on the big side when he left. The next time they produce Moa Bird there will be a rush to back her. This is a hack out of the ordinary. In moderate company Atareria is more j than useful. He is in the cup at Waipukurau. Now that he has come right Court Jester will probably be worth following. Riecarton touts have always had a good opinion of the son of Comedy King. EASTER RACING. (By “Moturoa/') Sportsmen in all parts of the Dominion will be well catered for this Easter, the principal racing fixtures being as follows; —Saturday: Auckland, Feilding, Wairarapa, Riverton and Tuapeka; Monday: Auckland, Feilding, Wairarapa, Riverton, Kumara, Waipakurau, Beaumont and Canterbury. The latter meeting will be concluded on Tuesday. Taranaki sports will have a fine attraction in the shape of the Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting to-any and on Monday, while others have already left to attend the Auckland, Feilding and Wairarapa meetings. Taranaki horses will race over a wide area, from Ellerslie to Riecarton, and it is significant that our representatives figure amongst the favourites for leading events. With anything like a good run, Bright Glow, Reremoana, Lady Desmond, Orazone, Benzora. and The Swell should race prominently during the next few days. Following is a review of the fields nt the principal centres:—- • • • • ELLERSLIE. A varied programme ranging from classics to hurdle and steeplechase events gives promise of good sport at Ellerslie to-day. The course is In good order, and the weather prospects are favourable. The. first race starts at noon. Proceedings open with the Great Northern Oaks, one and a half miles, which is always a very tricky race. Quality is lacking again this year, and little interest is being taken in the fillies’ race. Probably Doree, Damaris and Wild Pigeon will carry the bulk of the money. The Brighton Hurdles, two miles, will test out the majority of jumpers at this time of the year, but Archibald and Pouri stay well, and are reported to be in good nick. Red Comet may be the best of the lightweights. A good field will contest the Champagne Stakes, six furlongs, and the battle for the loOOsovs. promises to be a spirited one.. Mooregas will not be a runner, but Prince Humphrey, Raasay, Staghunter and Episode will start, and they appear to comprise tha dangerous division. On Trentham form Raasay should take some beating, but Staghunter and Prinee Humphrey are a.so in good nick, and there mty not be a great deal between the tfio at the finish. Then comes the Easter Handicap, of 175050v5., run over a mile. Twenty-one have been paid up for, and the chances of Bright Glow, Joy King, Money Order and Awarere are highly asseised. Bright Glow meets Joy King on albs. Letter terms than when a length separated them in the Thompson Hendi.ap, and, with a good run, the mare may reverse positions with her conqueror this time. The Manger© Steeplechase, about two and a half miles, has attracted a big field of very moderate horses, and the big fences at Ellerslie may trouble the majority. In a very open race the public may go for the top weights, Gar: mi and Prince Rufus. Second grade two-year-olds will get their chance in the Onslow Stakes Handicap, run over six furlongs. Drev.l, Lucy Rose and Pure Gold are not badly weighted. A great field will line up for the President's Handicap, one and a quarter miles, and recent form points to Satrap, Mandane and Hipo being in condition to run the distance out in good time. | To day’s racing concludes with the £den Handicap, one mile, and nothing appears to stand out in a big field. Dimmer is nicely treated with 7.3, and Welcome Home and Liaison also run k good mile. ♦ ♦ * ♦ FEILDING. Good fields and a firm track are pro nIsed, but good riders will be noticeable by their alieence. The flirt race starts at 11.30 a.m. Nine remain in the Kawa Kawa Hack
Hurdles, one and three-quarter miles, a distance which should suit Kilburn, though Modern and Panorama are also recent winners possessing speed. The Ongo Hack Handicap, five and a half furlongs, should suit quick beginners like The Raider, Helotis, White Ringlet and Fee Simple. The lastnamed has proved to be rather more than useful. «
The Manchester Handicap, one and a quarter miles, has drawn twelve acceptors, but Joy Bird may take on the Wairarapa meeting, where the opposition looks weaker. Orazone should run well with 7.9, while Duke Abbey ana Manly are not badly treated. The maidens engaged at Feilding are not a brilliant lot, but Service goes fairly well for six furlongs, and Vindication showed pace each day at Woodville. With an even send-off, Vindication should be prominent. Punters will require to put on their thinking caps when they come to tackle the Taonui Hack Handicap, seven furlongs. Bisox, Holus Bolus and Tanagra may show up, but the issue is very open indeed. Sprinters of some class will content the Mangaone Handicap, six furlongs, and a tine race should be provWea u Benzora, Kiosk and First Acre go to the post. Another good field will contest the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, eight and a half furlongs, and the prospects of Limosa, Aropeta and Gasnapper look brighter than those of the heavierweighted division. The curtain will be rung down on to-day’s card with the Haleombe Highweight Handicap, seven furlongs. Whenuanui, Lin Arlington and Partaga have recent form to recommend them. TAUHERENIKAU. Moderate fields will be seen out at the Wairarapa Easter meeting. The first race starts at 11.30 a.m. each day. Rash, having won at Bulls, is not now eligible for the Maiden Hack Race, and a seven furlongs trip should suit Cal.laumore and Tatrina. Bissac, who was unlucky at Rangitikej,. may, show up in the Mokai Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, though Panther is a fairly smart one. The Railway Handicap, six furlongs, will see Royal Ceres, Sarchee and Cosmetic in action. A smart crowd of two-year-olds will be saddled up for the Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, and Flying Hero and Millais will again measure strides. If Joy Bird contests the Easter Handicap, one and a quarter miles and 00 yards, she should go well with fist., though the bracketed pair, Vertigem and David Garrick, will not lack support. A small field will go to the post for the Tuhitarata Alack Handicap, one mile. Spearmiss may be favourite, but Bissac (if reserved) and Court Jester will also have good followings. The Martinborough Handicap, seven furlongs, will draw a better field. Beaumont goes well tinder a high scale oi weights, as does Vesperus, Rash (7.11) will be a well-backed runner in the concluding event, the Ferry Handicap, six furlongs, and Raukura (8.9) is also nicely treated. TURF TOPICS, The Auckland, Feilding and Wairarapa meetings will be concluded on Monday, and there will also be racing at Riecarton, Waipukurau, and many minor places. Crown Area ran seven furlongs in Imin. 32‘/a sec. before leaving Awapuni to fulfil Riecarton engagements, and the big son of Acre promises to keep the opposition busy in whatever races he is selected for.
Lady Desmond is a prime favourite for the Great Autumn Handicap at Riecarton, and Jack Barry can do the weight, 7.9, very nicely. Tresham and Set Sail may be tough opponents on the dav.
the Waipukurau Cup, one and a quarter miles, has drawn a fair field, amongst the number being Atareria, who is reported to have gone on the right way since running a close third in the Rangitikei Cup last month. With Reremoana, Lady Desmond and Barryanda to represent his stable, Oney Cox appears to hold a strong hand at Riecarton this Easter. All three horses are very fit, and Cox should not ret mu empty-handed.
Fair fields will be seen out at the Riverton meeting, which opens to-day. Circulation, Soldier’s Dream, Latin Quarter and Tuki are not harshly treated in their engagements.
