STRATFORD NEWS

SPORTS AT HUI ROA. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. Since Christmas the weather has favoured the majority of the athletic meetings held in and around Stratford. True to form the weather gods produced an ideal day for the Huiroa sports held on Mr. F. Mitchell’s properly, Huiroa, on Thursday. There was a good attendance and entries were good. The organisation was a credit to the officials, there being no delay between the events. The track is not a first-class one, but as the district is a hilly one it is difficult to find anything in the nature of a level space, and the grounds chosen were the best obtainable. It was not possible to hold cycling events, but numerous running, chopping, sawing and miscellaneous events served admirably to excite the interest of the spectators. Following the sports, a successful dance was held in the evening, supper being provided by the ladies of the district, #ho were also responsible for an excellent afternoon tea. The officials were.—Messrs. Wickham and Bowen (judges), Messrs. T. Kirkwood and A. J. Davey (referees), Messrs. L. Frances and W. McCoard (running and chopping starters), and Mr. J. As an expression of appreciation of his many services with the Stratford Dairy factory, Mr. G. Nicol was met by his fellow employees prior to his departure for Hamilton and presented with a travelling bag. Wishes for their prosperity in their new home were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Nicol. The motor-cycle racer R. G. Harford, who was injured at the jubilee races in Stratford, has been discharged from hospital, though both wrists are still far from normal.

At the meeting of the Automobile Association on Wednesday night Mr. S. Ward (president), said that several local retailers complained that the work of erecting sign-posts, etc., was left to the Hawera branch of the association, with the result that a certain amount of money was going out of the town. Mr. Ward explained that this was not the case and that all the warning signs and sign-posts erected by the Stratford branch were made in Stratford by Stratford tradesmen.
