FLYING HINKLER’S TRAIL

MANNING WILL START SOON OTHER SCHEMES REVEALED PLANS TO ENCIRCLE WORLD B.r Telegraph—Press Assn.—-Copyright Received April 6, 11 p.m. A. and N.Z. London, April 5. The airman Manning, who is planning a flight to Australia in a monoplane, has not yet fixed the date of his departure, but probably it will be a month hence. The second scat space is taken up by a petrol tank. The monoplane has a cruising speed of 75 to 80 miles per hour with a range of 1000 miles. The route will be via Lyons, Versailles, Sardinia, Tunis, the North African eoast and thereafter the same as that of Hinkler. Manning has taken half pay from the Air Force in order to carry out the flight, which is in no sense planned to rival Hinkler's. Every opportunity will be taken to speed up under favourable conditions, though the only means of lopping much off Hinkler’s time would be to go without sleep. Manning owns the machine, and is making the flight without financial backing from any source. PROPOSAL TO CROSS PACIFIC. ROUND WORLD FLIGHTS PLANNED Received April 7, 12.15 a.m. A. and N.Z. New York, April 6. Lieutenant Bert Hall has announced that ho will attempt a solo non-stop aeroplane flight across the Pacific from Seattle to Washington and thence to Tokio late in April or in May. If successful Lieutenant Hall will continue on around the world in an attempt to lower the existing record. Lieutenant Hall for the past five years has been engaged in aviation in Japan. Plans for an attempt to circle the earth in 24 days in a specially designed aeroplane have been disclosed by Lieutenant George Pond, of the United States Navy.

The details have not been revealed, but it is understood Captain Kingsford Smith will probably be Lieutenant Pond’s companion.
