Ti— members of rhe north riding of the Inglewood County (l.'rs. J. Hunter and J. Young), accompanied by the chairman (Cr. R. Stuart) and the overseer (Mr. G. Barrack), paid a visit of inspection to the roads in the riding on Saturday. The roads traversed were the Davie, Wortley, Lincoln, Y’ork and Richmond during the morning, and the Bristol, Everett, Rimutnuteka and Mangaone during the afternoon. AU th<S roads were said to be in good order, though owing to the dry weather there was loose metal on the Davie, Bristol, Everett and Rimutauteka Roads. Good progress is being made with the metalling of about two miles of the York Road and 18 chains of the Richmond Road, which will complete the metalling of these roads as far as the Inglewood County boundary. At a meeting of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club a harrier committee, consisting of Messrs A. S. Hunter, E. J. Hutchinson, Lankshcar and Captain G. H. Weir, was elected. The ballot for the cycling committee resulted id the following being elected! Messrs A. E. South, W. Roebuck, H. Wyatt and J. Hutchinson jun. Both cyclists and harriers fixed April 21 for an opening training-run on the racecourse. The necessity of the adoption of a definite jersey for the harrier work was stressed and enquiries are to be made for a suitable uniform. The secretary was instructed to write to the Taranaki Jockey Club, the Fitzroy Seaside Park Committee, and the Vogeltown, Westown and Moturoa school committees expressing appreciation for the use of their grounds last year. Mr, John Hetherington was elected a member of the harrier branch.
Fire broke out on Saturday morning in a building in Devon Street opposite the Catholic Church. Considerable damage was done in the seagrass and baskets making establishment of W. Pallin on the second floor, but the brigade wag able to prevent the outbreak extending further. Mr. Pallin’s employees had been working only a few minutes when they noticed a fire in the wall near the bottom of the staircase. They had to dash under the flames to escape. The second floor was soon blazing fiercely and two leads of hose were required to quell the outbreak. The building waa owned by the estate of the late A. Shuttle worth. The ground floor was occupied by the D.O.A. on behalf of the creditors of H. L. Martini. Slight damage was done there by water. The building was insured for £5OO in the North British Office and £5OO in the Northern Office. Mr. Pallin’s stock was insured for £3OO in the British Traders’ Office. The stock on the bottom floor was in* sured in the Royal Exchange Office.
A day of full pleasure is promised those who visit Kawaroa Park on Easter Monday. The sports enclosure on the ground will attract attention for a great part of the afternoon whilst the many events are tieing contested. No doubt the Highland dancing for children will be watched with keen interest, for in addition to many New Plymouth children taking part competitors are coming from other places. New Plymouth pipers will supply the dance music and Piper Simon McKenzie, of Dannevirke, a New Zealand champion, will assist. Afternoon tea will be dispensed in the bungalow and for picnic parties hot water and milk will be supplied free. Motor-ears can be parked without charge. The Regimental Band will give a programme music during the day. Adults are charged one shilling admission and children enter free, and as all received is spent in improving and maintaining this seaside resort, which to all is so favourably known, there should be a record number elf country aud town Tesidents present on Monday next as an encouragement to the voluntary which have made Kt'.wa.oa Park it is to-day.
