Gray, of Kapoiiga. » # » * Miss Rua Symes, of Hastings, who has been staying with Miss Dora Hawken at Mokoia for the past week or so, left for home on Thursday. **# ' * The official opening day of the Hawera Golf Club on Saturday last, postponed from the previous Saturday, was a great success, the weather being as near to perfect as possible. Mr. W. O’Callaghan, the president of the club, declared the season open, and the afternoon’s play began with a competition for mixed foursomes, Miss Page and Air. O’Callaghan returning the best net score for the 12 holes. Considering the long dry season the links were in splendid condition. Those present included many visiting players, the following making up the Eltliam party: Airs. Jimmie Quin, Airs. St. Leger Reeve, Misses Hilda and Alison Wilson, Aliss Trixie Connell, Alisses A. and Al. Quin, Messrs. Wylds, Lee, A. A. Stewart, St. L. Reeve, and J. Quin. Others present were: Mrs. Glasson, Miss G. Seatie, Aliss I. Al. Glenn, Aliss C. Robertson, Miss Dora Hawken, Miss Patricia Bell, Miss Richardson, Aliss Joan Page and Aliss McCormack. i # s On Friday last Miss Evelyn Buist entertained a number of her girl friends at an afternoon at her home in High Street. • # • • Miss Dora Hawken gave a most enjoyable tennis party at Mokoia on Tuesday afternoon, when those present' included Mrs. (Dr.) Young, Mrs. C. G, Trotter, Airs. A. Bayly, Miss Ruth Hawker). Miss Rua Symes (Hastings), Miss Joyce Powdrell, Miss Geraldine Goodson, Miss Alison Good, Aliss Ann Wills, Aliss Doris Meyriek, Miss Sylvia Lysaght, Misses Lilian and Ruth Pease, Miss Anne Page, Misses Molly and Sybil Washer, Misses Eileen and Kathleen Goodson, and Miss Evelyn Buist.
Airs. Al. J. Goodson and the Alisses E. and K. Goodson leave this morning by car for Wellington. They intend staving about a week in the citv. # • ♦ •
Mr. and Airs. A. Rouse left on Monday last for Wellington, from which port they will leave on an extended tour of England and the Continent. 3 * # #
On Sunday last the newly-formed Aft. Egmont Alpine Club, which has gained such wonderful support and so large a membership in an exceptionally short time, made its opening climb, which resulted in a regular gala for old Egmont. Mr. Rod Syme, the club’s captain, took a party of 38 climbers to he top—probably the largest party that has ever climbed to the summit. Besides this parly, many others from all parts of Taranaki chose the mountain trip, no less than 70 climbers attaining the uppermost peak—a record in Egmont’s historv.
At 1.30 in the afternoon the elub members met on Fantham’s Peak, about 175 being present, when the proposed hut site was chosen, the foundation stone was laid, and speeches were made by Mr. W. A. Spragg, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Rod Syme. Among those in Mr. Rod Syme’s party, all of whom reached their gaol, were Alisses Dora Hawken, Myra Powdrell, Rua Symes (Hastings), Evelyn Buist, Doris Meyriek, Molly and Sybil Washer, Kathleen Buckridge, Ina Haybitt le, Doris Moon (Opunake), D. (Houston (Opunake), O’Leary (Opunake), Zelda and Lorenna Spragg, M. Campbell, and Messrs. Rod Syme, Brian Haybittle, Brian Rawson, T. Hammonds, George Meyriek, R. F. Page, Palmer, Jack Buckridge, N. Armitage (Wanganui), Frank Champion, Veale, Carter (2), and Spragg. Many also made the journey to the Dawson Falls house in the afternoon, where, on the return of the climbers, Mrs. Murphy very kindly supplied afternoon tea. The day closed with three hearty cheers for the hostesses, Air. and Mrs.'Murphy, everyone declaring they had had a perfect day which would live long in their memory. * * * » Mr. and Mrs. R. Hutchinson senr., of Painter Road, left for the Hauraki Plains on Tuesday. * * * A party of Hawera Rangers organised by Miss Zelma Curran visited the Old Men’s Home on Wednesday evening and gave the inmates some Easter cheer. Mrs. P. Peters is a Wellington visitor to Kaponga. * • • * Airs. R. D. Welsh left on Thursday for a short stay in Wanganui. • • • • Aliss Young is visiting her sister, Mrs. Jim Hunter, in Fordell. • • • • Airs. Bennie, of Auckland, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs, H. Henderson, at Kaponga. * * * * Mesdames C. Dahl and C. Bailey, of Hawera, left yesterday for a holiday visit to friends in Bulls. * * * * Those present at :.n evening given by Mr. Jack Bayley at his sister’s, Mrs. F. Treweek’s, home during the week were. Misses Geraldine Goodson, Doris Meyriek, Joyce and Myra Powdrell and Messrs. J. Bayley, G. Chuck, G. Meyrick and N. Armstrong (Auckland). # • # • Mrs. Arthur Coleman gave a delightful party on Wednesday evening for her daughter Kitty. Airs. Coleman received her guests dressed in a smart semievening frock of black georgette finished with trimmings of silver. Miss Coleman wore a pale, blue crepc-de-chine frock and gold posie. Others present were Misses Molly and Sybil Washer. Miss Betty Ryan. Miss Ruth Pease, Miss Kathleen Buckridge. Miss Rona Suistcd (Auckland), and Aliss Myra Powdrell. » 4 * * I An afternoon was given on Tuesday I last at the Residence of Mrs, A. E. Raw-
son to wish Aliss Dome Corrigan, chief brown owl of the Hawera Brownie packs, bon voyage and to farewell Aliss Doreen Britland, acting-captain of the Hawera Ranger Company, who has resigned, and Miss Elma Turner, who is leaving shortly to take up a scholastic appointment in Hamilton. During the afternoon a short musical programme was given by Mrs. M. J. Goodson, Miss Ruth Mills, and Air. David Rawson, accompanied by his mother. An interesting competition was also held and was won by Misses D. Corrigan and Young. Mrs. Pacey, president of the executive, wished Afiss Corrigan heaps of good things on her trip and a safe return to Hawera and home, while Airs. John Houston, on behalf of the executive. Miss Ruth Mills (the Brownies), and Afiss Ballantyne (the Guides) eulogised the two Guiders whose resignations had been accepted with regret, and wished Aliss Turner success in her new appointment. Among those present wer. Airs. Pacey, Airs. M. J. Goodson, a;.d Airs. Jobson (vice-pre-sidents), Airs. John Houston, Mrs. R. R. Henderson, Mrs. Good, Sirs. Rawson, Mrs. Morris, Airs. J. W. Fyson and Mrs. Dickie are spending a week or two with friends in Olntra. « * * * On Tuesday of last week Aliss Stewart was hostess at a kitchen tea given in honour of Aliss Marjorie King, who Is to be married shortly. Miss Stewart welcomed her guests wearing a frock of orange marocain, while the guest of honour was attired in a smart afternoon frock of beige crepe-de-chine. During the afternoon items were given by Mesdames Robb and Twaddle and Miss Elsie Twaddle, and a novel competition held the interest of everyone. A feature of the afternoon was the bouquet presented to Miss King. It was artistically fashioned out of many dothes-pegs by' Mrs. Simpson. A dainty tea completed a most enjoyable afternoon. Among those present were: Mrs. Twaddle, Mrs. Davy, Mrs. W. G. Simpson, Mrs. J. W. Harding, Mrs. J. C. Robb, Mrs. Velvin, Mrs. J. J. Goodwin, Mrs. Laurenson, Airs. Bullock, Mrs. King, Mrs. Baggett, Alisses Young, D. Corrigan, J. Robertson, Dorothy Clement, Margaret Simpson and Elsie Twaddle.
