Nominations are already coming in freely for the T.J.C. Christmas meeting, which takes place on Monday, December 27, and Tuesday, December 28. This is not at all surprising, with the attractive programme offering, and by 9 p.m. on Monday evening, when nominationsfinally close, it will be surprising if the entries do not constitute a record. With Mr. H. Coyle as handicapper, Mr. A. Vincent as starter, and Mr. W. P. Russell as judge, owners and trainers can nominate with confidence.
RACING IN TARANAKI. (By “Moturoa.”) Taranaki horse-owners and trainers will have much to interest them in programmes for the holiday meetings advertised by the Taranaki Jockey Club and the Stratford Racing Club, uoniina tions for both meetings closing early next week. «< « # * The Taranaki J.C. Christmas meeting takes place on December 27 and 28, and eight events are carded each day. On Boxing Day the open races are the Christmas Handicap, of 450 sovs., one mile and a quarter, and the Flying Handicap, of 250 sovs., six furlongs, while a special feature will be the attractions offered for hacks, the Atiawa Cup, of 325 sovs., and maiden, juvenile, hurdle, and flat races all being well endowed with stakes. On the second day the New Plymouth Handicap (open), eightfurlongs and a half, is worth 350 sovs., and the Inglewood Handicap (open), six furlongs, while juveniles, flat races and back hurdles are again well catered for. No stake is less than £l5O, and a grand total of £3400 is offered. Messrs. H. Coyle (handicapper), A. Vincent (starter), and W. P. Russell (judge) will be in their usual positions. Nominations for all events close on Monday, December 6, at 9 p.m. » # # # Tlie Stratford Racing Club will complete the Taranaki racing carnival on January 1 and 3. The Stratford Cup (open), one mile and a quarter, -arries with it £7OO in specie and a gold cup valued at £5O, while the Douglas Handicap (open), six furlongs, is worth £3OO. On the second clay £450 will Ingiven for the Malone Memorial Handicap (open), nine furlongs, and £260 for the Ngacre Handicap (open). six fur-
longs. At Stratford also no stake- is worth less than £l5O, and all classes of horses —open, hack hurdles, hack flat, and juveniles—should be attracted by the good prizes offered. The principal officials are: Handicapper, Mr. W. P. Russell: starter, Mr. A. Morse; and judge, Mr. C. H. Washer. Nominations for all events close on Thursday, December 9, at 1) p.m., and those interested should note that the Stratford telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. TURF TOPICS. Taurnarunui and Methven races today. ’ « * * * Spoony will have plenty of admirers at Taurnarunui. * # * « Up north they are saving up to ho on Te Koroke—-a good sort. « # « * Margaret Birney appears to be meeting a poor lot in the Methven Cup. # * * * Moorland is consistent and is not overweighted in the sprint at Methven. * * * • Cantab was knocking at the door at Takapuna, and may show up at Taumarunui. • * • « If Solrose runs as well at Methven as she did at Riccarton she will take some catching. # * * # Moratorium and Kilbox are reported to be speedy maidens engaged in the Trial Plate at Methven. After the Feilding meeting Mr. C. McKay, the owner of Santiago, purchased the disappointing Alaric for a mere song, £lOO, it is said. n ® « Placed horses in last year’s Auckland Cup were: Rapine 9.8, Count Cavour 8.13, and Te Monanui 8.7. This time they have 9.9, 9.5, and 9.1 respectively. « » • * Of 44 horses weighted for the Auckland Cup, no less than 23 were placed on the minimum, while only four were assessed at 9st. or over. Once again the decision looks like resting between the top-weights. * * * « Last year Rcremoana won the first division of the A.R.C. Railway Handicap with 9.7, and Lady Cavendish the second division with 7.10. Mr. Macnamemin has taken no risk with them this year, awarding “Rere.” 9.13, and “The Lady” 8.9. # # * * On recent form Rapine is not badly treated with 9.9 in the Auckland Cup, and he should hold Count Cavour, Star Stranger, Te Monanui and Te Kara safe at the weights. Beacon Light may go well with 8.12, and Mask 8.0, Limerick 7.7, and Diogenes 7.3 are the most likely ones lower down. « ® * e Commendation, if started, should go well in the Railway Handicap with 8.12, and Civility 8.6, Deluge 7.12. Limited 7.11, and White Fang 7.2 all read well. White Fang appears to be well in, and the chances are that he will frighten out much of the small fry on acceptance night.
