RECENT SLUM TRAGEDY
HAWTHORNE DECLARED INSANE. Sydney, Dec. 1. Thomas Hawthorne, who was committed for trial on a charge of murdering two women in a slum at Erskinville, has been declared insane. He has been ordered to be detained in a criminal mental hospital until he is mentally fit to stand trial. Mrs. Cox and her daughter, Mrs. Galetta, were found dead in a squalid house in the slums at Erskinville, New South Wales, on September 10. Both their throats had been cut. Hawthorne was also discovered in the house with a gash in his throat, A bloodstained razor and a knife were found on. the scene of the crime. Indications of a struggle showed that the tragedy took place in the night. Hawthorne was treated in hospital and removed to a reception house. The viciousness of the crime was illustrated by the fact that a parrot and a canary, which were in the house, were also killed. Both the women had struggled fiercely with the murderer. Hawthornc was previously an inmate of a mental hospital.
