DISTRICT NEWS.
PUKENGAHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A pleasant social and dance was held in tho Pukengahu Hall last Friday evening in aid of the Stratford hospital furnishing funds. The arrangements were carried out by a committee of ladies of the district, with Miss F. Harris and Miss O’Neill as joint secretaries, who carried out their duties with credit. During the evening songs contributed by Mrs. Clarke, the Misses Mehrtens, Presland and Mr. Wilson, and a recitation by Mr. Downs were much enjoyed. Music was supplied by Misses Old, Mehrtens, Coleman, Presland and O’Neill. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Air. McDonald and Miss Willacy arid Mr. O’Neill and bliss Keehely. The guessing competition was won by J. O’Neill. A very creditable sum will be handed over as the net profits of the evening. Prizes for the Monte Carlo dances were donated by Messrs. Thompson, Cooper, Amesbury, and Gibberd (Stratford). The committee expressed appreciation for the generosity of the donors, and also to Mrs. Old, who canvassed for the prizes. The weather is still unsettled, and the sheepfarmers would welcome some fine weather to enable them to get their sheep shorn, and also the dairymen, who are wondering if we are going to get any summer this year. Nevertheless, it is wonderful how the herds are holding so well with the milk supply, considering the season. The Cheal Road and Waihapa factories are still turning out superfine cheese, the former all superfine for the last two months, and the latter a big percentage. This speaks well for the fanners for supplying the first-class raw material to enable the managers to make a high grade article, but they are complaining about the small advance from the Control Board, considering the price of cheese in the Home market. There will be some exhibits at the Stratford show' from this district. Mr. Best, who was successful at the recent Hawera show, having gained a first prize, will be an exhibitor. Mr. Harry Rowe is exhibiting a typical dairy cow in a class for a silver cup to be won three times. He has already won it once, and we hope he will be successful this year. At the recent proficiency examination held in Stratford, Master Tommy Death and Pattie Walsh were successful in passing, and Nina Harris gained a competency. All were pnpils of the Pukengahu school.
