ASSAULT ON DETECTIVE

THIEF SENT TO GAOL. By Telegraph.—Praia Association. Wellington, Dec. 2. Donald Sutherland Murray Grant, a labourer, aged 53, pleaded guilty l>efore Mr. Page, S.M., to the theft of £24, the property of John William Davies, and an assault on Detective Kane in the execution of his duty. Chief-Detective Ward said accused had been given money t 6 purchase a horse and cart, but disappeared. He was located by Detective Kane in a Wellington hotel, and was asked to go with tho detective. Ho went a few yards, and then struck Detective Kane. He had to be held down and handcuffed. He was a man of a very vicious disposition with a long list of convictions for false pretences and theft. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on the first charge, and one month on the second, the terms to bo cumulative.
