MATAPU
FARMERS’ UNION MEETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Matapu branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall on Monday evening last. Mr. F. Hoskin presiding over a fair number of members. The president referred, to the death of Mr. H. Free and a vote of sympathy was passed with his wife, family and relations. Considerable discussion arose out of correspondence relative to amending orders on milk cheques due to the elimination of the Farmers’ Weekly. The chairman stated that at a recent Dominion executive meeting the following resolution regarding the proposed Daylight Saving Bill was carried: “That steps be taken to circularise all provinces and branches requesting them to commence organising at once to oppose daylight saving.” The circular stated that the Bill would be again introduced next session and no stone must be left unturned to secure its defeat in the House. There was only one way to do this and that was for branches to place their views in no uncertain manner before their local members of I’arliament. Mr. Hosken then moved. that the meeting express its disapproval of the Daylight Saving Bill, and instruct its delegates to vote in that direction at the provincial meeting of the union. Another matter of importance brought forward was that of rural credits. Eventually the following resolution was carried: "That this executive should continue to agitate for legislation embodying the recommendations made by the Rural Credits Commission in its report, and that provincial committees be set up to carry on the movement.” Mr. Cameron pointed out that the above mentioned matters would receive special attention at the next meeting of the provincial executive. The correspondence was received, and tile branch delegates were instructed to procure further information with regard to the commissions report with power to act. It was decided to hold the root-grow ing competition again this year, the conditions to be similar to those of last year. Members expressed the opinion that a certain closing date tor entries should be fixed, and that all branches be asked to fall into line. Mr. Seed was instructed to bring the matter before tlie executive. Canvassers for entries Were appointed as for last year. GENERAL ITEMS. where they hope to spend a fortnight’s holiday. Messrs. MacL.’Do wie and Bootten, who are still in hospital in Hawera, are reported to be improving.
