SEQUEL TO MOTOR SMASH

TWO PASSENGERS KILLED CHARGE AGAINST A DRIVER. •SPOTS” AND HIGH SPEED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Nov. 30. Before the Magistrate, Henry Denham was cliarged to-day with killing David Forsyth and Evelyn Blanche Hildebrand by an unlawful act on November 6. This was the sequel to the Riccarton road fatality on race day. Archibald Seiwood, a farmer also a passenger in Denham’s car, gave evidence that he paid accused a 5s fare. The car went at a steady speed when it first left, but before reaching Coach corner witness “picked that the driver had had a spot or two.” In turning the corner the car went at a good speed on the wrong side, then skilled and hit a post. The speed would be about 35 miles an hour. Detective Bickerlike gave evidence that when arrested the accused said: “I suppose I’ll get ten years for this.” Constable Patterson said that he found a full bottle of whisky on the bottom of the car. The accused smelt strongly of liquor and was much excited. The chief traffic inspector said that the accused, Denham, held a private driver’s but not a taxi driver’s license and his vehicle was not licensed to ply for hire. Denham pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial. One of the witnesses said that the accused went to the wrong side to pass a car going in the same direction.
