IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
RESULTS ACCOMPLISHED QUESTIONS IN COMMONS PROGRESS OF MIGRATION By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 30, 7.50 p.m. London, Nov. 29. In the House of Commons, the Secretary for the Dominions, Mr. L. C. M. S Amery, replying to a question, said that from January 1 to September 30 there were 52,750 emigrants under the Empire Settlement Act, of whom 5500 families, comprising 20,648 individuals, went to Australia and New Zealand. Mr. Amery expressed regret that, apart from the Imperial Conference resolution, he was unable to any further information on the proposed fast ship scheme to Australia. Replying to an inquiry by Sir H. Brittain (Conservative, Acton) as to what the Imperial Conference had accomplished, Mr. Amery said: “We based ourselves on the Dominions’ complete equality of status and unity under a common Crown, thus giving a clearer expression to equality in constitutional procedure.” Mr. Thurtle (Labour, Shoreditch) asked: “Is it not the best comment that the Empire now exists in name only ?” Mr. Amery: “No.”
