HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. YEAR’S OPERATIONS REVIEWED. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth High School Old Boys’ Association was held last night, Mr. A. J. Papps presiding over an attendance of about 25 members. An apology for absence was received from the president, Dr. E. F. Fookes. The tenth annual report stated: — Gymnasium Fund. —Early in the year the committee made arrangements to conduct several campaigns with the object of increasing the fund, and it was pleasing to be able to report that so successful were the combined activities that the amount of £372 6s 2d was collected from the following: Gala day £212 18s Bd, football match £74 6s 'ill, .shilling parcels and donations £B5 7s. This, together with the amount in hand at the beginning of the year, £627 13s Hid, completed the £lO6O required. The £ for £ subsidy front the Government had been received, and the new gymnasium would soon be ready for use. Much praise was due to members and friends of the association to whose hearty co-operation the success of the undertaking was due. Old Boys’ Club.—lt was recognised by the committee that something was needed to bring members together, and arrangements were made with the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers’ Association which had been most beneficial to both associations, and there was no doubt that the formation of the . club had done even more than was expected of it. There were many matters which required developing, and it was hoped that the new committee, with the help of the members, would make an effort to complete the organising started this year. There was an amount of £l4 4s in the bank at present, and half the purchase price had been paid on a billiard table. . It was hoped that this purchase would be completed early next year. Yearly subscriptions had been fixed at £1 for town” members and 5s for country members outside a radius of ten miles. The club rooms contain billiard tables, card room, reading rooms, and a social room. Sports.—The Old Boys’ clubs in the town continued to prosper. The football dull had the strongest active membership in Taranaki, and all the teams gave a good account of themselves. The senior team played the annual fixture at Gisborne and Napier. The cricket club had a successful season, in that they annexed the Northern Taranaki championship. The surf club won the Tabor Surf Shield and Taranaki pennant, and were well represented in the Taranaki team for the Nelson. Shield championship at Napier. Finance.—From the accounts it would be seen that there was a credit balance of £3l 13s 6d to the general fund, compared with a balance of £25 18s fid, an increase of £5 14s fid on last year. Branch Associations.—The Wellington branch had a very strong membership, and it was very pleasing to have so many members outside the school town who took an active part and interest in the association. Just recently a branch was formed in Auckland.

General.—During the year vacancies on the executive occurred with the resignation of G. Roberts and 0. Collins. These positions were filled by the appointment of J. Palmer and T. J. Corkill. Old Boys were continuing to do good work for the school, but they would urge members to take a more active interest in the association. Old Boys at the university were continuing to do credit to the school. Many were continuing their studies in England, and although it was impossible to mention them all they had the pleasure of seeing Monty Barak at the /‘send-off” given for him by the association. The thanks of the association were due to the ladies who so ably assisted both at the ball and at the function undertaken for the gymnasium fund, and also to Mr. and Mrs. Moyes and the masters of the school for the assistance they have given the association at all times. CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman said they would all agree that the association was in a good financial position. The Old Boys’ Club had been a great boon, as it had drawn together a large number of Old Boys who would not otherwise have met. The returned soldiers had been exceptionally good to them. He was pleased to see that a branch association had been formed in Auckland. These branch associations should be fostered and where possible others formed. No doubt one would be formed this coming year in Christchurch, where there was a large number of enthusiastic Old Boys. They had had a busy year, and although they had made mistakes, they had given everything a try. They had a young executive, and it was only right that sooner or later the older ones should give way. He wished to thank the executive for their splendid year’s work. In seconding the motion, Mr. A. Bewley congratulated the officers on their good work during the year. The report and balance-sheet were adopted without discussion. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. A. R. Standish; viee-presidents, Messrs. 11. E. Fookes and A. J. Papps; hon. treasurer, Mr. C. Smart; hon. auditor, Mr. F. N. Whitcom-be; hon. secretaries, Messrs. J. IT. Boon and L. W. Lovell; committee, Messrs. R. Howell, H. Brown. P. Pope, G. Morey, S. Corkill, J. Palmer, C. Newell; school representative, Mr. J. Earl.

Some discussion took place upon the subject of the annual re union. The chairman explained that it was not held at Easter of last year because the year previously it had not been a success when held at that time. A suggestion that the annual dinner be followed by a theatre party, as was the custom with some other associations, was favourably received. The matter was finally left in the hands of the executive to ascertain the opinion of branch associations. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the outgoing officials, the ladies, who had assisted the association, the Press, and the ehair.
