MUSICAL RECITAL

MISS LEATHAM AND MR. DOBSON. TO HELP DISTRESSED FAMILY. A musical recital of very wide appeal is to be -given in St. Mary’s Hall tomorrow evening at eight o’clock by Miss Constance Leatham and Mr. J. Dobson, who will he assisted by the Misses Mary Coleman and Vinnie Ross. The Mayoress (Mrs. F. E. Wilson) has charge of the arrangements and the proceeds, will be given to the district nurse committee to relieve a distressed family. At the present time the committee lias no money for this purpose, and has had to rely on grants made by the Hospital Board. The second object of the concert, and of the matinee to be given on Saturday, will therefore be to create the nucleus of an emergency fund from which drawings may be made to meet cases of necessity.

As will be seen from the advertisement appearing elsewhere, the programme has been selected from classical compositions of a brilliant and tuneful character. There will be instrumental trios for piano, violin and ’cello, and the Three Fours Valse of ColeridgeTaylor, and a vivacious Gipsy Rondo by Haydn, are among the attractive numbers chosen for this combination. But among the most brilliant items of the evening will be Weber’s Konzertstuck (opus 79) and Mendelssolm’s concerto (1 opus 25) played by Miss Leatham and Mr. Dobson. Both these pieces give immense scope for piano playing that will delight and charm by its wide variety of shading and treatment. Throughout the programme an effort has been made to cater for all tastes among music lovers. There will be melodics soft and grand, bright and gay; all of them will be beautiful. But apart from the musical excellence of the fare provided, the cause itself is alone worthy of support.
