TRADE OF TARANAKI
REVENUE FROM IMPORTS RECORD RETURNS IN PROSPECT. INCREASE FOR ELEVEN MONTHS. With the Customs revenue collected on goods imported into Taranaki through the port of New Plymouth totalling £109,535 for the eleven months of this year, and witli the prospects of the month of December being one of the -heaviest of the year, there is every possibility that 1926 will see a record for the port. Only three times in the history of the port has the total annual revenue exceeded £lOO,OOO. In the year 1920 the dues amounted to £102,423, which was not exceeded until last year, when they amounted to £114,116. From the table submitted below it will be noticed that the amount for 1920 was greatly in excess of those for other years about that period. This is accounted for by the fact that during tiie | war years manufacturers in England were besieged by numerous orders from New Zealand which they were unable to fulfil until 1919. Goods consequently arrived in the Dominion during 1920 in phenomenally large quantities. The following table shows the Customs dues collected since 1917. from which it will be seen that by the end of this year the revenue collected will exceed by much more than double the amount in 1917:
The revenue collected during the month ending yesterday was £10,65'6 19s Id ,Compared with £12.295 0s 8d during the corresponding month of last year. This drop is accounted for by the fact that transhipments in November, 1925, were exceptionally heavy, although direct shipping was practically the same. Besires the usual coastal vessels with transhipments, during the month the following vessels called direct with dutiable cargo: The Enton (Pacific Coast), Kaitangata (Australia), Turakina (England), West Nivaria (Pacific Coast) and Gabriella (Australia). The following table shows the comparative amounts collected in November of this and last year, and also the figures for the eleven months: Month of November. 1926 £10.656 19 1 1925 £12,295 0 8 Decrease £1,638 1 7 January to November. 1926 £109.535 192.5 £106,290 Increase £ 3,245 Prospects for next month are exceptionally bright, for, in addition to transhipments, the following vessels are scheduled to call direct: The Kittawa (Australia), Waitemata (Pacific Coast), Stroma (Nauru Island), Mahana (Lon don), Port Melbourne (London), Dewey (Pacific Coast), all with dutiable cargo. The amount of excise duty collected during November, 1926, show’s a substantial decrease compared with the corresponding month of last year, while a slight increase is shown by a similar comparison for the eleven months.
