WATERSIDERS’ STRIKE
ITS INFLUENCE SPREADING. CRANE EMPLOYEES COME IN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Nov. 29. The crane employees at Newcastle have decided to strike as a protest against the action of the railway commissioners in serving -notice of dismissal on 86 crane employees. The union’s action will have the effect of completely crippling the shipping trade of the port and within a week of forcing the management of nearly every colliery on the northern fields to shut down its mines. The dismissal of the crane employees is due to the operation of the no overtime strike of the coal trimmers, who ceased work at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, instead of working 24 hours. z Lately there has not been sufficient work to justify the retention of the services of the crane drivers. Sydney, Nov. 29. No developments have occurred in the no-overtime strike during the week-end. The effects of the strike are now being more seriously felt, and many vessels are delayed. Received Nov. 29, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 29. As a result of the crane drivers’ strike the port of Newcastle is at a standstill, ajid fifteen steamers are waiting for coal. If the dispute is not settled speedily, work at the collieries will be seriously inconvenienced and some of them will be compelled to cease operations.
