CYCLING

(By “Wheel/’) C. Hellier. A. Putt and W. Brewster arrived back from Auckland on Tuesday morning. Hellier, the winner of the Hamilton-Auckland 100-mile cycle race, said he was very lucky to get a clean run in the race and no punctures, as the roads were as bad us they could possibly be for road cycling. Brewster had a spill; then later a puncture, and retired. A Putt was unlucky enough to calsh the mumps the night prior to the race, and was not well enough to ride. The New Zealand cycle championships will be held at Gisborne on January 1 and 3, on a grass track. It is very much hoped that S. McCann will be able to represent Taranaki, as it ! is au excellent chance for him to win I a New Zealand championship. He is a very strong rider ou the grass tracks. The New Plymouth Cycle Club’s series of 12 handicap track races for Mr. W. C. Weston’s Cup, will commence on Tuesday evening next at 8 pm., when a mile handicap will be decided for the seniors, points to count 4,2 and 1. If a good nomination is received, a series of six races will be run for juniors under 17 years. The Kaponga Cyclo Club is fast making its members’ presence felt in cycle events, as a Kaponga boy, L. Gargan, scored a surprise win in the Wanganui dub’s 25-mile race last Saturday, beating three New Plymouth boys in the I sprint for the line by inches. j A cycle dub has been formed in In- • glewood, and keen interest has already been shown, as the membership is about 40. Given plenty of racing for the boys and Inglewood should be able to produce some good riders.

The talk of the week with the cycling enthusiasts of New Plymouth is the dub run to the Waitoitoi beach next Sunday morning. AU interested, apart from dub members, are invited, and anyone may ride with the party, as the riding speed will be strictly set to suit the of riders, and no one will be allowed to break away from the party, either going or returning. Friends, both lady and gentlemen with cars, will also lie welcome, and it is expected that an enjoyable day will eventuate. The party will leave the Bank of New Zealand corner at 8.30 a.m., and expect to be home before 6 p.m.
