MAORI CHILD’S DEATH

MEDICAL, ATTENTION REFUSED. CORONER'S STRONG COMMENT. Raetibi, Nov. 25. An inquest was held before the district coroner, Mr. W. IL Sandford, concerning the death of a Maori child, Wao Nuitana, aged 6J years, who died on Sunday at Ruatiti The inquiry lasted two days. Evidence snowed that the child wae healthy until a few weeks ago, and after it had been ill for a month the father rought it into Dr. Boyd, Raetihi. On examination the child was found to be suffering from appendicitis and was sent to the Raetihi Hospital, but the mother would not let it leave her. The child was taken home and after nine days was .removed to a neighbours house and died three days afterwards. During the whole of the illness the child had not been attended to by a doctor nor had it had any medicine.

The father of tile child eaid he did not leave it at the hospital because it was under the Ratana treatment. Ratana had wen it about a month ago, but did not treat it. A verdict was returned that death was due to appendicitis, but the child had be.eit shamefully neglected by his parents- during his illness in that medi cal attention was denied.
