“MISS NEW ZEALAND”

“A BEAUTIFUL CHARACTER.” UNCHANGED BY CONTEST’S GLAMOUR. The delight felt by the Dunedin people at Miss Thelma MoMillan being selected as “Miss New Zealand,” was expressed by the Mayor, Mr.; H. L. .Tapley, who said it was generally conceded that Dunedin girls yield to no other in the land as to their beauty, and “Miss New Zealand’s”' success is a practical manifestation of that attribute of Dunedin’S girlhood. Miss McMillan’s Dunedin admirers wish her good fortune in ■ her future, and trust that her pathway through life will be full of successes, good health and good fortune.” “In my opinion the judges did the right thing in placing her first, because she is a most beautiful ■ girl in every respect.” That expresses the feeling of Mr. Arthur Barnett, head of the: firm which employs -MisS McMillan. He. told a reporter that when Miss McMillan went to Auckland he adjured her to remain the same no matter what distinction she won. Thelma has not changed. Mr. Barnett received this wire from her: “Just the same, although Miss New Zealand.” Mr. Barnett paid the girl a singular tribute. “She is a beautiful character.’'' he said, “and she has quite a number of accomplishments. She is a good tennis player and swimmer, and has always given attention to health-giving exercise. Above all. she is wonderfully modest, and not affected in any- way by the glamour of this contest." Much credit is due to her for this, and to her mother also.” “She is very popular with the staff?” queried the pressman. “They are. crazy about her,” was the reply. “’J hey were more excited at her election as “Miss Otago” than the young lady was herself. Much of her charm with the judges would lie in the fact that no matter where she is or in what situation one meets her, anyone would be very pleased to chat with her. She is rpite an exceptional young lady, with a type of beauty that is very rare. and. better than all, she is a delightful girl to speak to.” “We are nearly wild with excitement.’’ said one of those who work with Miss McMillan in the mantle department. “She is a lovely girl, ami we are all very, very proud of her.”
