DEATH OF A PRISONER
FALL OF EARTH IN QUARRY
“CONDITIONS ARE NOT SAFE.”

Taumarunui, Last. Night. An inquest on Arthur Hasler, aged 30, a prisoner who met his death on Monday at the Makatoke Viaduct prison quarry through a fall of earth, was held to-day before the district coroner (Mr. A. S. Laird). After hearing lengthy evidence, the coroner returned a verdipt of accidental death, and said he would be failing in his duty if he did not call the attention of the Justice Department to the fact that there was not a certificated quarryman in charge of the work. It was clear that the quarry was not safe, and keener supervision in eueh place's was undoubtedly necessary to safeguard human life.
