BOOTLEG BOOM DEAD

TIGHTER LAtVS SHUT DOWN SCOTS’ DISTILLERIES. A Hundreds of thousands of pounds yearly are being- lost to British whisky firms by the break-up of organised bootlegging in America. ' The value of the shares of most of the .important distilling companies has fallen considerably since last year. A large number of distilleries in Scotland have been forced to close down. “Whisky drinking has declined slightly in England,” said a member of a prominent whisky firm recently, “but undoubtedly the largest fall in sales is due to the fact that prohibition is bein'' more strongly enforced in the United States. “Formerly large quantities of whisky were bought by people who hoped to make a large profit by smuggling it into America and selling it there. Now the risks are too great.”
