SUPREME COURT

NEW PLYMOUTH SESSION PRISONERS FOR SENTENCE. CHARGES HEARD YESTERDAY. The Supreme Court was occupied throughout the day at New Plymouth yesterday with the hearing of t-harges of bigamy, making a false declaration, and making a false statement, against Samuel Julian, of Opunake, and the hearing of charges against Joseph Signal, of Hawera, of breaking, entering and theft of £l6l from Rasmuss Rasmussen, of Patea. The former case was concluded in the morning, the jury returning early in the afternoon with a verdict of guilty on all counts, and the accused was remanded for sentence. The latter ease was unfinished when the Court adjourned at 6 p.m., and will be continued -.this morning. Eight charges of a lengthy nature, involving breaking, entering and theft from a number of stores down the coast were preferred against Ambrose Fowler and Albert Graham. The total amount involved was £305 7s, and the reading of the charges occupied the time of the Court for a quarter of an hour. Both accused pleaded guilty to all of the major charges, and were remanded for sentence. Albert Fowler and William Fowler pleaded guilty to charges of receiving stolen goods, and w-re also remanded for sentence. Ambrose Fowler and Albert Fowler pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking and entering a motor garage at I’e Puke, Bay of Plenty, on or about July 31, but guilty to charges of theft of motor accessories to the value of £l9 6s from the garage. His Honour intimated that he would first hear the charges to which the accused pleaded not guilty before sentencing them on the othei’ charges. This morning Henry Ernest Ferguson Samuel Lee, who pleaded guilty to charges of forgery and uttering a valueless cheque at Patea, and Charles William Hall, who pleaded guilty in the lower court to two charges of forgery, detaining a postal packet, and theft, will come up for sentence at 10 o’clock and the Court will then probably proceed with the hearing of the charges of breaking, entering and theft against Joseph Signal.
