DISTRICT NEWS.
TANGARAKAU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) To become more conversant with the actual progress of the construction work from Tahora and Tangarakau onward a large and representative number of Taranaki citizens invaded the camp on Thursday last, and with Mr. J. B. Richards (chairman of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce), the Rev. Kayle (chairman of the Stratford Progress League), Mr. J. W. McMillan (Mayor of Stratford), Mr. E. Walter (member for the district), who acted as guides, the party were met and conducted over that part of the line under way by Mr. T. M. Ball, district engineer, and Mr. B. C. Annand, assistant engineer, and the various phases of the work in hand explained to them. Before starting out to inspect the route the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, at a gathering after luncheon in the hall, expressed the thanks of the visitors to the Public Works Department for affording them the opportunity of inspecting '.he works, and also to the Railway Department for placing at their disposal a special train to make the journey. Mr. Ball, on behalf of the Public Works Department, in replying, said that the department was always pleased to grant facilities for citizens to inspect its works and so keep in touch with the progress of the lines under construction. After a tour over the range beyond the camp the party returned to the hall, and when afternoon tea had been handed round entrained for Stratford and further afield. The visitors expressed themselves well pleased with the day’s outing and. with what they had seen of the works.
