AMERICAN OIL SCANDAL

CHARGES OF BRIBERY*.

HIGH OFFICIALS PROSECUTED.

By L'elegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington, Nov. 22. The first criminal case resulting from the disclosures by the Senate investigating committee of 1923-1924 opened with the trial of the former Secretary of the Interior, A. B. Fall, and Edward Doheny on charges of conspiracy to defraud the Government. The prosecution claims that a lease of Elk Hills naval reserve in California for 100,000,009 dollars, granted in 1922, was influenced by an alleged bribe of 100,000 dollars given to Fall by Doheny. The defendants face a maximum sentence of two years in a Federal pris . and fines of 10,000 dollars. The selection of the jury is now proceeding and is likely to take several days. The trial is expected to last at least a month, perhaps several. The indictment was returned 18 months ago, being one of five issued against the principals involved in the oil scandals divulged by the senate Committee.
