STRANDING OF A STEAMER

CAPTAIN CENSURED BY COURT.

By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Nov. 23, 11.15 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 23.

The Marine Court which inquired into the stranding of the steamer Rio Claro, which went aground on Scott’s reef, about 30 miles east of Cairns, on September 9, found that the charge against the master, Rowland James Park, that he carelessly navigated the vessel, was sustained, but that failure to take the utmost precautions could not be regarded as a gross failure of duty. The Court, therefore, did not deal with his certificate of competency but censured him.

The cost of repairs to the vessel amounted to £lB,OOO.
