Gay Juliet RACING AT ASHHURST (By “Moturoa.”) The writer was at Ashhurst yesterday, and found the course in splendid order for to-day’s races. Secretary Trass has everything in “apple-pie” order for the meeting, and the majority of the horses engaged were already on the course. The slip on the railway side of the Manawatu Gorge will not inconvenience trainers in any ' way, a two-horse motor lorry conveying horses from Woodville, while many trainers walked their horses through the Gorge —a matter of only four or five miles, at all events. 1 • * • • The Ashhurst meeting is to Manawatu and Rangitikei what Opunake is to Taranaki, an ideal picnic gathering, and the Ashhurst Club offers the hand of hospitality to all. Admission charges are low, while ladies are admitted free to the lawn. Needless to add, the meeting is popular with the fair sex, and good fields and the prospect of fine racing will attract big numbers of turf enthusiasts there to-day. #N# « « Racing commences at 11.30 with the Hack Hurdles, 14 miles. Garzon has been scratched, but thirteen remain to contest the race, and the issue appears to be very open. Killoch will be making her first appearance in public over fences and, although a good jumper, it is asking her a lot to win at the first attempt. Axle goes well on the track, and won there last year. Good Mark is a safe conveyance, and Tamakana also jumps well. Tampean showed pace at Levin, finishing third after being prominent in the early stages of- a fast-run race. Blood Red, Empire Camp and Gurnion are likely ones amongst the 9st division. If Killoch reproduces her track form she may be prominent, but the public will probably prefer the chances of proved hurdlers like Good Mark and Axle, while Gurnion (said to be a good sort) may also be in the picture. * * * * The Maiden Stakes, 5 furlongs, will see a big field paraded, and quick beginners like White Ringlet, Molto and Bissac should give their followers a good run. * * # # Nine remain in the Pohangina Handicap, G furlongs, and principal interest will probably centre upon the running of Gold Box, Polyphemus and Prince Hal. • * * « The Komako Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs, has drawn a crowd of seventeen, and the start from this post is a bad one, favouring the horses drawing an inside position. With any luck in the draw, Kilmezzo. Lin Arlington and Rising Star should take some heading off. Kilmezzo and Lin Arlington have both been raised 71b for winning at Levin, making their weights 7.7 and 8.10 respectively. Of the pair, the showing of Lin Arlington was the more attractive. * « ® * A fine field of fourteen is carded for the Ashhurst; Cup, If miles, and this should be the best betting race of the day. Killocra was spoken of at Ashhurst yesterday as a horse likely to run well, and Kilfaire is another fancied candidate. Last year the favourite, Waetea, won nicely in Roy Reed’s hands, but as a rule an outsider triumphs. There is every possibility of a surprise in to-day’s race, and Penman may be the one to trouble Killocra at the finish. * * * w The Siberia Hack Handicap. G furlongs, does not offer much difficulty J o followers of form, and Cerf, Royal Land and Bank Draft will carry big money if they are saddled up. Prince Hal won the Raumai Handicap. 7 furlongs, last year, but has 81bs more to carry to-day. Killocra (if reserved) should hold the Veteran Marble Arch gelding.safe at a difference of 61b, and Blonde and Monaghan also appear to be nicely weighted. If Monaghan draws an inside position he may take some catching. . * * * The. concluding event, the Gorge Handicap, is run over a mile, and here again a quick beginner should find most favour. The field is not a strong one, only four of the thirteen acceptors being weighted above the minimum. The course may not suit Bonhomme, and Brigadier Bill and General Wai will probably carry the hulk of the investments. NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK NOTES. AU the fast work yesterday morning took place on the plough, which was in good order. tAnolo went five furlongs, the last four taking 53sec. He will be a runner at Takapuna on Saturday. Mountain Bell and Otapawa took Imiu 7 sec for five furlongs. Quillfire and Resinous went nicely over a similar distance. Merry Jest, with a light boy, dashed over five furlongs. Te Monanui and Oration were not asked to do their best, but both moved well. Kiwini, Advance Camp, Ardale and others worked usefully.
