What is believed to be the first instance of a railway ever being offered by public auction occurred when the Chicago, Mil wacke and St. Paul railway was sold in this manner at Butte. ■Montana, for 14'0.000.000 dollars. It also constituted one of the larges financial transactions in the history of the United States. The nurchasers were the :epresen tative of Zuhn. Loeb and Company, the financier’, and the National City Company, of New Y’ork, reorganisation managers.
