PRISONER INHERITS FORTUNE

SCENE AT GATES OF GAOL. By Telegraph—Press Assa.—Copyright. Home, Nov. 20. An unusual scene occurred at the gates of the Padua prison, when Nino Gilli, a poor tradesman, who was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for fraudulent bankruptcy, was released. His wife, relatives, and a crowd of friends arrived in motor ears and whirled Gilli away joyfully to elaborate celebrations. The cause of the jubilation was that Gilli, while in prison, unexpectedly inherited a large estate and a bank account amounting to about £173,000 from a grand-aunt in California, with whom he had never even corresponded. Gilli, since the news of his fortune was confirmed, had been unable to sleep, but was treated with all the consideration possible under prison rules. He had, however, to serve his sentence, less the three months remitted for good conduct. He announces that lie will build a hospital in his native town of Ferrara, and already has applied for a passport to visit California.
