AN APPLICATION DEFERRED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. An application by a private motorbus owner to run a service between Auckland and Pukekohe was opposed by E. Casey, divisional' superintendent of railways for the North Island, at » meeting of No. 1 licensing authority. Mr. Casey said Pukekohe was 30 miles from Auckland and had a good. train service. The licensing authority should not allow buses to prey on transport undertakings that were serving the bulk of the people. Such undertakings should be safeguarded from “pirates. The railways were the largest carriers in the -Dominion, and he suggested that, the present application should be deferred so that the department could consider the position. The department was not now confined to the rails and might be in a position to put in an application for a bus service. The department wanted .to cater for the suburban districts and would like to able toput a proposition before the licensing authority. ' The application was deferred. NAPIER SERVICE TAKEN OVER. Napier, Last Night. ' The Railway Department represents* fives have concluded negotiations for the taking over of the ■ buses of the. second company running parallel with. / tho railway between Napier and Hastings. These services, which now come under the control of the department, eliminating private competition, have been in oeration about a year and seriously affected the railway passenger traffic.
