FATAL QUARRY ACCIDENT

PRISONER KILLED BY ROCK.

Taumarunui, Last Night

An accident occurred at the quarry at the Makatote viaduct when, through a fall of earth and rock, a prisoner named Arthur Hasler was killed and another prisoner named Ronald Walter Neilson received a broken leg. At ten o’clock this morning some men were carrying out drilling operations when a fall of earth came down from 50 feet up. Hasler was killed instantly. Neilson’s leg was struck by a rock and suffered a double fracture. A warder named Raton, who was standing a few feet away, escaped uninjured.
