IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
WORK NEARING THE END OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT PERMANCY ESSENTIAL By Telegraph—Preus Asm. —Copyright. Received Nov. 21, 5.5 p.m. London, Nov. 19. The fourteenth plenary sitting of the Imperial Conference this morning adopted the reports dealing with overseas settlement, workmen's compensation and the exhibition of Empire films within the Empire. The fifteenth session this afternoon approved the report of the inter-imperial Relations Committee dealing with the Dominions' status, relations between the various parts of the Empire and with foreign countries and also a system of communication and consultation between the various parts of the Empire. The conference will deal with the outstanding committee reports on Monday. An effort is being made to supply the official general report of the conference at the end of the last sitting on Tuesday. A delegation from the Empire Press Union waited upon the Imperial Communications Committee on the subject of wireless and cable rates. The plenary session considered and adopted the Overseas Settlement Committee’s report which includes the following resolution: ‘The Conference is of the opinion that the problem of overseas settlement, namely, the redistribution of the white population of the Empire in the best interests of the whole British Commonwealth, is of paramount importance, especially as between Britain on the one hand and Canada, Australia and New Zealand on the other. ‘The Conference notes with satisfaction that the redistribution of population is being accelerated by the policy consistently pursued since the conference of 1921. It endorses the view then expressed that the policy should be permanent. It recognises that owing to financial, economic and political considerations it would be impracticable to promote mass movements of population, but it is satisfied that by continuous adherence to the present policy it should be possible steadily to increase the flow of population to those parts of the British Commonwealth where settlers sre most needed for development and general security, and where they will find the greatest opportunities."
