BID FOR FREEDOM

BORSTAL MEN ESCAPE.

By Telegraph.—Press Association

Invercargill, Last Night.

A determined bid for liberty was made at about 2 p.m. on Saturday by three youthful inmates of the Borstal Institution. They had been working with a gang under the charge of a warder and at a suitable opportunity disappeared into the undergrowth. Their movements were traced northward until they reached the Makarewa River. At one stage the escapees entered a dwelling-house and, it is alleged, purloined a quantity of food and a carving knife with which one was found to be armed when they were recaptured early in the evening. The men were sighted by Constable Fraser and a party of warders near the riverbank. The constable gave chase and drove one of the men into the water, where he was taken in charge by the warders. The others then set off up the bank, but were soon intercepted by Constable Fraser, who had made a detour across high ground. The escapees were returned to the Borstal Institution after about six hours’ freedom.
